Keanu Reeves has had an interesting career since the 90s and has been labeled one of the bonafide action heroes in Hollywood. Instead of the macho, indestructible type of heroes presented by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, Reeves’s heroes are vulnerable yet are determined to overcome all obstacles.

These traits are seen in films such as Point Break, Speed, Matrix, and the John Wick films. Outside of his action films, Reeves is not considered a strong dramatic performer and many have criticized his acting abilities in films such as Much Ado About Nothing, and Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Another failed attempt at an intriguing thriller was 2015’s Knock Knock where his unconvincing performance was exposed.

The horror genre has extensively covered the topic of resurrecting loved ones and then learning that you have to let go so that the dead can rest in peace and the living can move forward in life. And with advancements in technology, storytellers in the sci-fi genre also started imagining what it’d be like if we start holding on to our loved ones long after they are gone. Black Mirror’s San Junipero and Be Right Back continue to be two of the most memorable takes on this concept as they talked about mortality and whether or not technology will ever be able to replicate something as fleeting as love and youth. An episode of Extrapolations, titled 2068: The Going Away Party, used cloud-based storage space that doubled as a “heavenly abode” to comment on classism during dystopian times. Movies like Transcendence and Replicas talked about the pitfalls of...

Part of the reason why "The Strangers" has endured as an effective horror movie is that we've all had that feeling of being home alone at night, yet it still feels like there's something else watching us from the shadows. After 85 minutes of homebound terror, the words "because you were home" make all of the preceding violence sound so hauntingly meaningless. A couple on the rocks is thrust into a harrowing night of survival for no other reason besides that their lights were on.
It wasn't until a decade later that a sequel came to theaters with "The Strangers: Prey at Night," which /Film's Chris Evangelista called a "schlocky slasher showcase." Rather than rehashing the hopelessness of Bryan Bertino's 2008 home invasion thriller, the follow-up from Johannes Roberts saw the human prey actually landing a few blows in against their stalkers, and living to see another day. Filmmaking rarely travels a straight path, but for “Monster” it was exceptionally twisty. After the legal drama starring Kelvin Harrison Jr. premiered at Sundance in 2018 in the U.S. Dramatic Competition, it’s seen a title change, its first distribution deal fall through, and the original title restored. Producers Tonya Lewis Lee and Nikki Silver say it was all worth it: The movie premiered on Netflix May 7 and was among the top 10 Netflix titles in the U.S. last week.
“It has been a long journey, but it has been a really good journey,” Lee said. “It didn’t go the way we thought it would, but ultimately we landed where we were supposed to land. People are seeing it, they’re feeling it, and they’re responding to it.”

Since making his screen debut all the way back in 1984, Keanu Reeves has appeared in almost every imaginable genre. While he holds a well-earned reputation as one of the modern era’s greatest action stars after headlining Point Break, Speed and the John Wick series, he’s always seemed to have a soft spot for sci-fi.
As well as starring in three Bill & Ted movies spanning over 30 years, the internet’s favorite actor also donned Neo’s leather and sunglasses combo for The Matrix trilogy, with the fourth installment having wrapped shooting last month before releasing on HBO Max and in theaters in December of next year. That’s seven sci-fi efforts between those two brands alone, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Some good news this weekend: The early 2020 small uptick in grosses continued, with total ticket sales totaling around $130 million. (The second weekend of 2019 saw $120 million.) And leading the charge was Sam Mendes’ innovative “1917.” At $36.5 million, it more than doubled #2 “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” for an easy #1 placement.
The three-day period saw four new and expanding wide studio releases, compared with two in 2019 — “The Upside” and “A Dog’s Way Home,” along with the independent “Replicas” which only roused $2.3 million. That means the biggest reason for the jump is more new titles rather than suggesting a major box-office resurrection.
The big question this year is whether original titles can continue to perform like “The Upside,” “Hustlers,” and “Knives Out.” “1917” is showing initial strength that should push it to those levels, or higher. But the other three new wide releases all look like they will fall short of $50 million domestic to some degree.

This year, Keanu Reeves has been the subject of a very strange renaissance online. After starting off 2019 with the horrendous film Replicas, his nearly back-to-back-to-back performances in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, Always Be My Maybe, and Toy Story 4 quickly made him one of the hottest names of the summer.
So when the beloved actor, who’s been notoriously quiet about his personal life, appeared to publicly confirm his relationship with artist Alexandra Grant, the internet, for lack of a better word, broke.
Unfortunately, some of the ramblings that ensued were not all that kind. Many people, who found the 46-year-old’s decision to wear her natural, silver hair onto the red carpet, mistook her for a much older woman. In fact, they mistook her for a very specific older woman: Helen Mirren.
While that theory was quickly busted by a fact check, its ripples still found their way to the Oscar-winning actress’ doorstep.

After last weekend saw the weekend box office top the same weekend in 2018 for the first time all year, this weekend looks as if it is going to be tight on that front. Disney and Marvel's Captain Marvel is certain to top the weekend yet again as it pushes over $260 million domestically in just ten days while Paramount debuts the animated feature Wonder Park, Lionsgate and CBS release Five Feet Apart and Focus releases the near-future thriller Captive State. Also looking at a top ten finish is Lionsgate's release of No Manches Frida 2, the sequel to the 2016 feature that debuted with over $3.6 million from just 362 locations. At the top for a second weekend in a row will be Disney's release of Marvel's Captain Marvel, which debuted with a strong $153.4 million last weekend and has been pacing relatively similarly to The Hunger Games since release. That, plus the -...

Updated with more numbers and analysis. Oscar nominated title Never Look Away stood out in another subdued specialty weekend, grossing an estimated three-day total of $26,270, easily topping the small number of newcomers.
Greenwich Entertainment bowed docudrama The Invisibles by Claus Räfle in four locations Friday, grossing $27,000. The results were buoyed in part by weekend Q&As with the filmmaker and Holocaust survivor Hanni Lévy, who is played by Alice Dwyer in the film.
Kino Lorber Films launched Jean-Luc Godard’s The Image Book, which received an honorary Palme d’Or at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, taking in $15,200 in three locations.
Among holdovers, Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures sci-fi thriller Replicas with Keanu Reeves crossed $4M in its third weekend, though it grossed a slow $42K in 84 theaters Friday to Sunday, averaging $500.

The opening weekend of “The Upside,” the Kevin Hart-Bryan Cranston remake of the worldwide French hit “Intouchables,” ended the three-week reign of “Aquaman.” It made just over of $20 million — besting estimates — and comes after a few weeks of controversy for Hart that suggested the long-delayed film might take a hit.
The odd-couple pairing of a wealthy and paraplegic New Yorker and the ex-con hired to care for him is a curious inverse of “Green Book.”
Initially a Weinstein film, it premiered to mixed critical response at Toronto 2017, with plans for an early 2018 opening upended by the company’s demise. Its pickup by Stx, a totally capable distributor with access to top theaters, still suggested to some a limit to its, shall we say, upside. The company has had several successes, but only one opening over $20 million. And Hart’s promo tours for the film got more attention for...

Nearly 20 years after starring in “The Matrix,” Keanu Reeves has suffered the worst wide-release box office opening of his career with “Replicas,” a sci-fi film shunned by audiences and critics alike.
The sci-fi movie grossed a mere $2.5 million from 2,329 screens, falling below tracker projections for a $4-7 million launch and earning a per screen average of just $1,073.
It is the lowest opening for a film starring Reeves that opened on more than 1,000 screens. The last time he had a launch this low was all the way back in 1990 with the TriStar crime comedy “I Love You to Death,” which opened to $4 million.

In a surprise box office victory, Stx’s “The Upside” doubled expectations with its $19.5 million debut, enough to defeat “Aquaman’s” three-week reign in North America.
Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart co-star in “The Upside,” which marks the studio’s first No. 1 opening. It also ranks as the second-best start for an Stx film behind “Bad Moms,” which launched with $23 million in 2016.
The box office victory comes as Hart has been in the headlines for whether or not he would host the Oscars. The comedian was tapped to emcee the industry’s biggest night, but stepped down when controversy sparked over homophobic jokes he made in the past.
What’s even more promising for Stx is that “The Upside,” based on the 2011 French hit “Les Intouchables,” was able to overcome its rocky path to the big screen. The Weinstein Company was originally on board to distribute the comedic drama about...

Stx and Warner Bros. came out as the big box office winners this weekend. Stx saw its first No. 1 opening with “The Upside,” which beat tracker expectations with an estimated $19.5 million opening from 3,080 screen. It was expected to open to $10-12 million.
WB, meanwhile, won’t take their fourth straight No. 1 weekend, but “Aquaman” will still become the studio’s first $1 billion hit since “The Dark Knight Rises” in 2012 and the fifth in studio history. The superhero film added $17 million this weekend to push its domestic total to $287 million.
“The Upside” was originally supposed to be an R-Rated film released last year by The Weinstein Company. But after Harvey Weinstein was accused of sexual misconduct and TWC declared bankruptcy, Stx reached a distribution deal last August with Lantern Entertainment, the label created out of TWC’s bankruptcy sale to Lantern Capital. Outperforming expectations, STXFilms's The Upside debuted atop the weekend box office, upsetting Aquaman's bid for a fourth straight weekend at #1. That said, Aquaman isn't exactly focused on its runner-up position domestically as the film is now the first in the DC Extended Universe to top $1 billion at the global box office. As for the rest of the week's new wide releases, Sony's A Dog's Way Home delivered on studio expectations while Entertainment Studios's sci-fi thriller Replicas failed to place within the weekend top ten. With an estimated $19.59 million, STXFilms's The Upside topped the weekend box office, dramatically outperforming expectations heading into the weekend. The remake of the popular French film The Intouchables, The Upside stars Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston, and while the reviews were mixed heading into the weekend, opening day audiences seemed to enjoy themselves, giving the film an "A" CinemaScore, which bodes well for the film's future.

There seems to be no downside to Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart’s comedy-drama “The Upside.”
The Stx Films pic is on its way to becoming the entertainment company’s first No. 1 debut with an estimated $19.5 million from 3,080 North American sites, knocking Warner Bros.’ “Aquaman” into the second place slot. Stx Films’ previous biggest debut was 2016’s “Bad Moms,” which landed $23.8 million for the No. 3 spot.
“The Upside” took in $6.95 million on Friday and is looking at a weekend estimate nearly double what the film had initially projected, which may be due to the film’s recutting in order to land a PG-13 rating as opposed to its original R. Stx Films reached a distribution deal with Lantern Entertainment, which formed out of the Weinstein Company’s remaining assets, to handle the pic. It was originally intended to be released last year, but was postponed after the Weinstein scandal.

Stx/Lantern Entertainment’s “The Upside” is turning out to be the first big surprise of the 2019 box office. After grossing just under $7 million on its opening day from 3,080 screens, the Bryan Cranston/Kevin Hart comedy is now projected for a $19.5 million opening, topping a fourth weekend “Aquaman” to take the top spot on the charts.
If this result holds, it will be the first Stx release ever to open at No. 1, and will be the second-highest opening in studio history behind “Bad Moms,” which opened at No. 3 to $23.8 million in July 2016.
“The Upside” wasn’t even on Stx’s slate until five months ago, when the studio struck a distribution deal with Lantern to release the film. Lantern Entertainment is a new company formed by Lantern Capital from the assets bought from The Weinstein Company’s bankruptcy. TWC had originally been set to release “The Upside” last year, but...

Kevin Hart-Bryan Cranston’s “The Upside” is showing surprising strength in its opening weekend by narrowly topping “Aquaman” for the No. 1 spot at the North American box office, early estimates showed Friday.
Stx’s “The Upside” is launching with as much $7 million on Friday, including $1.1 million from previews, and could wind up the weekend with as much as $20 million, according to revised forecasts. If those projections hold, “The Upside” would dethrone “Aquaman,” which was pegged Friday to finish the weekend in the $15 million to $18 million range.
Family adventure “A Dog’s Way Home” is performing in line with expectations and heading for $10 million to $11 million for Sony. Entertainment Studios’ Keanu Reeves sci-fier “Replicas” isn’t showing much traction with a $3 million weekend projected amid dismal reviews.
Warner Bros.’ tentpole “Aquaman” had been expected to win its fourth consecutive weekend easily, given that “The Upside” was pegged to finish in the $10 million range.

It’s only January, and already 2019 is shaping up to be a solid year for Keanu Reeves. Not only does it mark the release of his latest Sci-Fi film “Replicas,” but “John Wick: Chapter 3” and “Toy Story 4” are also looming on the horizon. And it’s not just Reeves who’s carrying all the momentum, his “Replicas” co-star Alice Eve is riding high off of her recent addition to “Iron Fist” Season 2 (Rip) in which she gave a layered and nuanced performance as a killer with split personalities.

Frankensteined together from the stiff corpses of a dozen smarter movies, “Replicas” is a cloning thriller so carelessly stupid that it often feels like a mad science experiment gone wrong. In fact, the film is such an awkward chimera of stolen ideas that the premise alone violates the basic laws of screenwriting, and probably also those of nature itself.

Kevin Hart-Bryan Cranston’s comedy-drama “The Upside” has launched with a moderate $1.1 million at 2,460 North American sites in Thursday night preview showings.
Family adventure “A Dog’s Way Home” retrieved $535,000 for Thursday night previews starting at 5 p.m. in 2,657 locations. Entertainment Studios’ Keanu Reeves sci-fier “Replicas” opened with $200,100 at 1,630 venues on Thursday.
Warner Bros.’ tentpole “Aquaman” is expected to win its fourth consecutive weekend easily over the newcomers by earning another $15 million to $20 million. The Jason Momoa starrer has dominated at multiplexes and is nearing $1 billion in worldwide grosses, topping $270 million domestically and $700 million internationally.
Forecasts for Sony’s “A Dog’s Way Home” and Stx-Lantern Entertainment’s “The Upside” have both been in the $10 million range, leaving both in a battle for second place along with holiday holdovers “Mary Poppins Returns,” “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” and “Bumblebee” and the second weekend of “Escape Room.”

“The Upside,” the American remake of “The Intouchables” starring Bryan Cranston, Kevin Hart and Nicole Kidman, opened to $1.1 million in Thursday box office previews on 2,460 screens.
The strong number for a January release puts it ahead of Thursday preview numbers for several other recent family comedies, including Mark Wahlberg’s recent “Instant Family,” which brought in $550,000 in an admittedly more crowded holiday release season.
The film from director Neil Burger and released by STXfilms is projected to bring in $10 million this weekend from approximately 3,080 screens with the hope that strong word of mouth might make for a surprise hit in the early weeks of January, but it does hold just a 34 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
By comparison, the similar 2014 dramedy “St. Vincent” starring Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy opened to $7.7 million and went on to gross $44 million domestically.

Keanu Reeves' half-baked sci-fi yarn Replicas proves why cloning is bad in more ways than one.
It’s not clear how far in the future Replicas is set since it takes place in a Puerto Rico that looks (from what little we see of it) remarkably pristine and free of the ongoing aftermath of Hurricane Maria. But that’s just one of the many vagaries that plague this threadbare little film, which essentially takes place in two locations and is packed with enough pseudo-scientific nonsense to sink even cheesy old TV shows like Lost in Space or Time Tunnel.
To be clear, we’re not sticklers for absolute scientific accuracy in our science fiction, as long as it makes reasonable sense and everything else is working. But Replicas doesn’t have that luxury. Keanu Reeves stars as William Foster, a brilliant scientist working for a stock biotech firm on...

Keanu Reeves plays a doctor at an experimental research facility in the amusingly unconvincing “Replicas,” which is set in a Puerto Rico that looks like it has sustained no damage at all from Hurricane Maria, a visual decision that suits the totally unrealistic movie.
Reeves’ Will Foster is first seen waiting for a donated brain that is being brought to him via helicopter, and director Jeffrey Nachmanoff (“Traitor”) cross-cuts between Reeves anxiously staring at his watch and the brain being rushed into the facility. During an operation to place this brain into a robot body, Dr. Foster is asked, “Do you concur?” by a colleague and Reeves cries, “I concur!” in that ineffably stilted but enthusiastic Keanu-ish way.
Dr. Foster plays Dr. Frankenstein with this robot, urging it to relax once its brain has been turned on; the robot freaks out and tears itself apart, but nevertheless, Foster is encouraged.

At the same time Focus will go nationwide with the release of On the Basis of Sex after two weeks in limited release and Annapurna will do the same with If Beale Street Could Talk. With still one more week to go until the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and the release of Universal’s “Glass,” the January box office is expected to be relatively quiet in its second weekend. Despite the release of three new films, ticket sales will be mostly driven by holiday holdovers.
The film expected to be the top new release in this frame is Stx/Lantern Entertainment’s “The Upside,” an American remake of the 2011 French film “Intouchables” starring Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart. The film was supposed to be released in March of last year, but was postponed after its original distributor, The Weinstein Company, filed for bankruptcy after multiple people accused Harvey Weinstein of sexual abuse.

Warner Bros.’ comic-book tentpole “Aquaman” — starring Jason Momoa and directed by James Wan — has generated over $943 million worldwide and is well on its way to crossing the $1 billion mark. If the aquatic blockbuster sees a similar decline to last weekend, it could add another $15 million to $18 million domestically in its fourth week of release. “Aquaman” has earned a solid $259 million in the States, but overseas...
