The moon is shining bright over the Hollywood Bowl and Joni Mitchell lets out a laugh.
It’s the first of two sold-out Joni Jam concerts at the outdoor venue, her first headlining concert in Los Angeles in over 24 years; a couple years since Mitchell returned to the stage at the Newport Folk Festival, a year after her first ticketed concert in two decades at the Gorge — and about nine years after a brain aneurysm nearly killed her and sent her to the hospital. The film industry could have avoided a lot of tragedy if they just didn’t use so many horses— or invite the wrath of a vengeful God.
14 ‘Ben-Hur’ (1925)
While filming at the actual ancient Roman chariot racing venue Circus Maximus, the wheel of a chariot broke and the stuntman driving it died.
13 ‘Noah's Ark’ (1928)
While trying to play God and recreate “the great flood,” a ton of extras were injured, one guy lost a leg and three people died.
12 An Unknown 1929 Film
A super-famous German shepherd named Strongheart accidentally touched a hot studio light. His burn became infected, and he died a few weeks later.
11 ‘The Viking’ (1931)
Twenty-seven people died for B-roll. After the film was finished, a producer and the real-life adventurer Varick Frissell decided they needed footage of the abandoned, ice-bound ship The Viking. While filming, some dynamite on board spontaneously exploded.

By all accounts, NBC Chicago’s A Very Chicago New Year broadcast was a bizarre watch, thanks in no small part to Billy Corgan. Not only did he make the contrarian choice of singing “Summertime” in the middle of winter, but he also performed a whimsical new song inspired by Windy City children’s TV staple Wizzo the Wizard.
While appearing on the broadcast live from his tea house Madame Zuzu’s, the tuxedoed Smashing Pumpkins frontman debuted “Wizzo” while accompanied by the costumed son of the late Marshall Brodien, who plays the current iteration of Bozo the Clown’s sidekick.
“It’s up to you to believe in magic,” Corgan sings on the track. Watch the performance and the full broadcast below.
Marshall Brodien appeared as an early iteration of Wizzo the Wizard in the WGN-tv children’s show Bozo’s Circus, developing the character alongside its evolution into The Bozo Show.

In her song, “At the Holiday Party,” St. Vincent describes a convivial scene in which everyone celebrating loosens up, maybe takes a few pills, and lets down their guard. It’s about enjoying a safe space and being yourself, and she brought that same vibe to Jack and Rachel Antonoff’s ninth annual Ally Coalition Talent Show on Tuesday. Video from the event shows her performing that track, off her 2021 album, Daddy’s Home, with some of the night’s other performers, including Jack Antonoff on piano and Bartees Strange on guitar.

Exclusive: FX is developing a half-hour comedy series based on the 2021 This American Life segment “I Was a Teenage Smuggler.” The series will be penned by Joanna Calo, Carlos López Estrada and the story’s reporter Kevin Sieff. They will serve also executive produce alongside Ira Glass and Alissa Shipp of This American Life.
FX had no comment.
The series will follow a group of Mexican teens who thanks to a loophole in U.S. immigration law that prevents anyone under 18 from being prosecuted, are enlisted by cartels to smuggle migrants across the border. The teens soon find themselves making unfathomable amounts of money and living the lives of their dreams but with an ever-ticking clock until they are legally considered adults.
Estrada is also attached to direct the pilot and produces via his Antigravity Academy banner.

In a new interview with People, former “Saturday Night Live” star Leslie Jones said her friend Chris Rock was “really affected” by the infamous Will Smith Oscars slap at the 2022 Academy Awards.
“That shit was humiliating. It really affected him,” Jones, whose new memoir is called “Leslie F*cking Jones,” told the legacy magazine. “People need to understand his daughters, his parents, saw that. He had to go to counseling with his daughters.”
This event likely doesn’t need a recap, but just in case some readers might not remember what happened, Rock appeared at the 2022 Oscars to announce the winner of Best Documentary. In his remarks before handing out the award, the former Oscars host mocked Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head by suggesting she was ready to star in a sequel to “G.I. Jane.” (Pinkett Smith has alopecia.) For over 100 years, the Motion Picture & Television Fund has provided financial support and services to entertainment industry members in need of help. That need has never been greater as the actors strike stretches into its third week and the writers strike into its third month — both with no end in sight and thousands unable to work.
To support the fund, Max Greenfield, Darren Criss, Colman Domingo, Yvette Nicole Brown and Harry Shum Jr. joined hundreds of guests on the Neuhouse Hollywood rooftop on Sunday night for the MPTF Next Gen Summer Party.
While the mood was festive, the strikes and their implications for Hollywood were never far from anyone’s mind.
“There are people who have asked, ‘Why are you going to a party?’ But we need this funding to be able to help people,” explained Brown. “I was talking to [MPTF president] Bob Beitcher, who said that the fund was...

Joni Mitchell has shared her new live album At Newport, commemorating her surprise appearance at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival.
Co-produced by Mitchell along with fellow Newport performer Brandi Carlile, the album features 12 live recordings. Throughout the performance, Mitchell and Carlile were accompanied by artists including Phil and Tim Hanseroth, Wynonna Judd, Marcus Mumford, Celisse, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius, and Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes. The setlist includes Mitchell classics like “Big Yellow Taxi,” “A Case Of You,” and “Both Sides Now.”
Not only was Mitchell’s Newport set her first live performance in over 20 years, but it also marked a rare public appearance since she suffered a brain aneurysm in 2015. Mitchell’s longtime friend, filmmaker Cameron Crowe, wrote about the magic of her return in the live album’s liner notes. (You can get the physical version of the album here.)

Pap Chanel is ready to shock the world with her latest EP, "Paptivities." After a nearly two-year gap between 2021's "Pretty & Paid 2.0" and her new six-track project, released May 12, the rising rapper tells Popsugar why she took her time crafting "Paptivities" - and why the EP sounds vastly different from her previous releases. "On this project right here, every song sounds completely different," Chanel explains. "I have one song where I'm telling my fans all my business. I'm super excited for that one because people don't really get to hear transparency from artists. This is a record where I got really vulnerable and talked about the good, bad, and the ugly."
The record in question is the EP's opener, "Pap Stories," an introspective track where Chanel raps about everything from wearing "war wounds" to brushing off haters who doubted her. As promised, every other song on "Paptivities" adopts a different...

It’s beyond obvious that women deserve a movie that portrays and celebrates them in their sixties and seventies reveling in the joys of romantic adventure and uninhibited sex. It’s not so obvious that they deserved “Book Club,” the 2018 comedy about four hale, hearty, and prosperous senior friends who read “Fifty Shades of Grey” in their monthly literary white-wine klatsch, only to discover that E.L. James’s S&m princess fantasy jump-starts their hibernating libidos and/or their desire to commit to the men who are courting them. You could use a whole Thesaurus paragraph of withering descriptives to evoke the sort of movie “Book Club” was. It was prefab, it was cookie-cutter, it was paint-by-numbers, it was broad enough to play to the peanut gallery, it was four glorified sitcoms jammed into one overly synthetic package.
And yet…the movie, in its story-parts-falling-into-place-far-too-neatly “Look how bawdy we’re being!

Wattpad Webtoon Studios, the entertainment arm of the user-generated fiction and comics entertainment outfit, and Italy’s Leone Film Group have announced two new adaptations based on hit young-adult Wattpad novels.
Taiwan-based author Ann Rae’s romantic mystery “The Locker Exchange,” which is set in a U.S. high school and has over 26 million reads globally on the Wattpad platform, is set to become an English and Italian-language feature film. Netflix’s featherweight A Tourist’s Guide to Love follows a familiar arc, but there’s more to fall for in classics from Summertime to The Green Ray
There’s nothing new under the sun in A Tourist’s Guide to Love – though there’s an awful lot of that sun, brightening every postcard shot in this featherweight Netflix romcom, and for viewers starved of warmth after a long, dreary winter, that’s enough of a lure. It follows a familiar arc: reeling from a breakup, a perky travel executive (Rachael Leigh Cook) takes a trip to Vietnam for notional work reasons, only to be swept off her feet by her charming local tour guide (Scott Lý). The film hits every holiday-romance beat you expect, but it hardly needs to shake things up: cinema has a proud and comforting tradition of stories in which a trip somewhere sunny and far away proves...

Will Smith once shared some strong opinions about the rap community that some artists like Eminem took slight issue with. It turns out Dr. Dre may have also had a problem with Smith’s comments as well.
So when the opportunity presented itself for Dre to poke some fun at the blockbuster superstar, Dre apparently couldn’t resist.

Like their unlikely namesake, the Zombies have had several lives since being formed by keyboardist Rod Argent and vocalist Colin Blunstone in St. Albans in Hertfordshire U.K. in the early 1960s. The first British Invasion act after the Beatles to score a chart-topping U.S. hit, with “She’s Not There,” the guys disbanded shortly before their 1968 soon-to-be-cult album, “Odessey and Oracle,” was released. That collection produced another stateside smash in “Time of the Season,” which Al Kooper belatedly convinced Columbia’s Clive Davis to put out.
Since Argent and Blunstone reunited as the Zombies in 2004, the group has released four albums, the latest being the Covid-delayed “Different Game,” on the indie Cooking Vinyl, which serves as the follow-up to 2015’s aptly titled “Still Got That Hunger.”
The duo is fresh back from an acclaimed trip to Austin for South by Southwest, where they were honored with the Grulke Prize for Career Act,...
