This is a movie made by men for men. Even for a Roman Polanski film, it's cutting it too close for comfort to debate against a modern audience that this movie is not exploitive toward women. It's very difficult to have a potential rape scene in the first five minutes of a movie and consider the genre of that movie to be comedy let alone artistic.
The movie does attempt to be artsy by including works by Francis Bacon, Vincent Van Gogh and music from Mozart. Although the setting of the story is right out of a Salvatore Dali dream, the scenario is more of a nightmare that not only torches its main character, Nancy, but the audience as well.
Other than the blatant nudity the movie successfully delivers on, the only major saving grace for this movie is Marcello Mastroianni. As soon as he appears on screen, you fall in love his crazy character and put up with the rest of the movie.
Far from Gone with the Wind, this movie is a fun romp from an era gone by. Sydne Rome is a beautiful idiot in her performance. She is fun to look at and are drawn in to her very weird situation in this movie.
From time to time, you believe there is going to be an interesting plot twist, but no. What you see is what you get. Could this be a dream? Is everybody dead and are ghosts? Ideas like this will just give you a headache. Just sit back and watch the pretty colors.
Some of the sequences are Polanski like. The style of storytelling is worth their weight in gold. Then, you have several moments of sexploitation that hurts all attempts to consider this movie as art. Sadly, it is a fun movie that most modern audiences won't appreciate.
Still, for what it is worth, this movie is a fun time for any fans of Polanski, Marcello and especially unnecessary nudity.
