I've always loved 1950's B & W Sci-Fi. It was an era when almost nothing was known about what lay among the stars, allowing for imaginative stories that wouldn't really work in our more modern age. And at this point I've probably seen every one of them worth watching.
MERCURY MEN is by far the very best Sci-Fi done in the style of the 1950's era of the genre. Plenty of attempts have been made to capture the style and character of films from this era, but nearly all of them are either horribly written garbage played by entire casts that have no right at all to call themselves actors, or tongue in cheek parodies that elicit lots of groans, but few to no laughs.
MERCURY MEN is different. I'd compare it to 1951's The Thing From Another World.
