2/10
Exploitative hokum

Warning: Spoilers
Having just discovered this almost forgotten movie on a streaming channel I was was curious to view and assess its' value, given its' extremely bad reception on release and standing almost 50 years later.

In actuality it totally merits its' much- maligned reputation...it adopts a sensationalist and exploitative way of depicting racial prejudice in the Deep South of many years ago.

Overall it is poor filmmaking; the whole production looks cheap/ the music soundtrack is irritating/ scenes are disjointed and much of the movie is unconvincing and boring.unintentionally, some of the ' dramatic' scenes are almost laughable ( for example- the fight between Richard Burton and Cameron Mitchell)...also the graphic rape scene where the female is ' badly beaten' only to appear in a following scene lying in a hospital bed with a slight cut on her lip and with full makeup and eye lashes intact! Much of the general acting is really bad.....Lee Marvin is just ok but not overly convincing as the town sheriff...Burton is completely miscast, with a hit and miss attempt at a Southern accent ,resulting in a dull performance.

Overall it is hard to like this movie or find any positives...not recommended.
