The primary characters of the anime series are Mai and Shouko, both of whom are girls. They are well-developed throughout the film and elicit a powerful emotional response from the viewer. The plot, which combines aspects of Korean drama and soap opera with melodrama, is compelling but emotionally deceptive. With a few quips in the start, the movie is deep and somber. The cliched and artificial character arcs are designed to guarantee a satisfying resolution. The melodrama may seem distasteful to cynical viewers, but diehard admirers will love the climax. Although there are no new songs in the film, it would have been nice to reuse the anime's ending theme. For ardent fans, the movie's conclusion is satisfactory overall, but cynical viewers might not find it pleasing.
