Expresso (1994)
10/10
Funny and creative

Michael Ruman's "Expresso" is a highly humorous and creative exercise in style, very entertaining but so-and-so as for substance. A series of chaotic situations revolving four blonde characters (natural blondes or wearing blonde wigs) involved with crimes and who are trapped inside a car that's being chased by the police on a low-flying helicopter.

The close-up on the actors reveal that it's merely a projection being shown in the background and a tiny set where they interact, and when there's a view from above we have a miniature car speeding down the road. Lots of gibberish exchanged between the characters and the only identifiable sound comes from the radio telling about a mysterious case that was robbed, who committed the crime or in the boy's case a possible fake kidnapping. It gives the impression of creating a sense of tension but the group is so confused in fighting each other and escaping the cops that it all becomes a funny experience.

It doesn't have much to say but it's so creative and very well-made that you can admire it for all those simple qualities alone and nothing more. 10/10.
