Or, maybe you're too dumb, dummy! Dream Home's "story" is told in an extremely non-linear fashion. Hmm, I like it when Quentin Tarantino does it, difference is, he can tie disperate subplots and timelines together masterfully. This movie's motive seems to be strictly to confuse. There is a rapid-fire sequence where they spell out to you where they have flashbacked and flashforwarded to (totally randomly!), which only served to confound me. Flashback to 1991, Li-Sheung is a little girl being forced to move from her home, and will miss her friend she talks to in the building across from her, as well as spending time with her father looking out at the ocean (major plot point here). This entire sequence is done in such a melodramatic, hushed and whispered, and treacly way, it made my skin crawl. Anyway, flashforward to 1997, and... Li-Sheung is a FULLY GROWN WOMAN! Ok, I was under the impression the 91 flashback was backstory for the protagonist. (Turns out it was). Ok, jump around a few more times for the hell of it. I was confused at least til the 50% mark.
Turns out this premise is totally idiotic. So, with real estate prices skyrocketing in Hong Kong, she can't afford her "dream home," which overlooks the ocean, bringing her back to her childhood. SPOILER She goes on a mass-murder rampage in order to bring the property's price down. That's the freaking story. She has this fond memory of her father, yet he abused her... and she basically murders him! And collects $2 million in life insurance. Missing subplot: Police investigation into insurance fraud.
This film's one saving grace: It's got some great (albeit incredibly far-fetched) gore. So you've got a foreign horror movie, in a foreign language, with some great gore. Forget all this movie's shortcomings and total convolution, fans and critics fall all over themselves for crap like this.
