2010 Salzburg Festival. This production is better than the others I've seen so far. Patricia Petibon handles the part very well and has an engaging acting style; those big eyes, like a woman in a Schiele painting, help her a lot. Michael Volle is excellent as Dr Schon, the most important male character, while Thomas Piffko is adequate as Alwa. Franz Grundheber's Schigolch is really memorable; he looks and sings like someone beaten down by life. Tanja Ariane Baumgartner sings Geschwitz as a more balanced woman than some other mezzos. The sets are the best I've seen so far, they help to make the plot comprehensible.
