Not bad for what it is

THE ENCHANTING PHANTOM is an erstwhile A CHINESE GHOST STORY remake hailing from the mainland. I'm normally not a fan of modern Chinese fantasy cinema, finding it merely a string of CGI set-pieces with very little to no story to go alongside, and this film has many of the same problems. However, it's a little more charming than many I've seen, with a better grasp of character and some set-piece action that doesn't disappoint. Some of the ghoulishly macabre creations are well handled too, although a lot of the CGI FX still look like CGI and nothing else. Kudos for the casting of the excellent Yuen Wah as the good wizard and for old-timer Norman Chu as the bad.
