Unlike in his previous efforts , Lionel Baillemont 's third work deals with a notorious historic name ;The Marquis De Sade appeared many times in the history of cinema, either in the flesh (Keir Dullea portrayed him in a 1969 film) ,or through his books (ever since the silent age : see Luis Bunuel's "l'âge d'or" (1930));in "l'indompté " and " mademoiselle de la Charce ", the director made very interesting movies,because they dealt with unknown (but real-life) characters : Gabriel Boule and the marchioness of La Charce .
Here ,the director does not renew his subject ,let alone transcends it . Sade ,imprisoned , writes his memoirs and remembers ....Unfortunately ,most of the movie takes place in a brothel and it often leads us into soft porn territory ,with uninteresting characters such as an English student talking pidgin' French ...And the scene when the writer talks about the society ,their moral,and their religion leaves the viewer hungry for more ,the philosophy is only skimmed over.
