Review of Fly Rocket Fly

9/10
Great take on a little known story
29 November 2020
I stumbled upon Fly Rocket Fly on the French/German channel ARTE earlier this year and I am glad I did. This documentary has a lot to tell as the underlying story is pure gold. The filmmakers had access to most of the key players here for a first-hand account of how a small team of German engineers went on a mission in the middle of nowhere in Zaire to build a rocket launcher. Another case of reality is stranger than fiction indeed.

Stellar effort from director Oliver Schwehm with a superb storytelling of Herzogian proportions. My hope is the film reputation and fame are going to take off on their own merits so that we can enjoy watching a second film to discover the Libyan adventures of the OTRAC crew.

(October 2021 edit) A follow up has been released as a TV Movie called "Deutsche Raketen für Gaddafi", albeit this effort was much less ambitious than the original film.
