It's more unbalanced than other movies from the same director (Nell'anno del Signore, In nome del papa re), but its guilt is to be too generous. Here we have everything about 1800 and 1973, we have actors, songs, drama and humour, political and human, action and reaction. Vitti was a bad singer but also the best italian actress in comedies, Proietti was unlucky with movies but he was great, Gassman was Gassman and here he plays a kind of parody of himself. Trovajoli was as great as Morricone, more than Piovani. Magni knew so much roman history but he got sense of humour.
