Let's Eat! (2016)
6/10
Generic formula, that actually managed to make soup from watered down broth...
16 July 2020
When I sat down to watch "Let's Eat!" (aka "Kai fan la!") I must admit that I was somewhat excited to get to watch it. Why? Well, first and foremost it is a Hong Kong movie and I do love the Hong Kong cinema. But it also had Chapman To on the cast list and he is really a talented actor.

Granted, I had never heard about "Let's Eat!" prior to sitting down in 2020 to watch it. So I didn't really know what to expect, much less knowing what the movie was all about.

Well, I will say that the storyline was adequate. Sure, it was predictable, but that didn't really rub off on the overall enjoyment of the movie. So writers Siew-Hoong Ang, Chaing-Ming Lai and Chapman To definitely had managed to put something nice together here.

The movie was carried nicely by a good cast ensemble, which included the likes of Chapman To, Hoi-Pang Lo and Aimee Chan. Now, I wasn't particularly familiar with Aimee Chan, but she definitely proved to put on a good performance in this movie.

For a Hong Kong comedy, then I think "Let's Eat!" is a pretty straight off the how-to-make-a-comedy bandwagon, for better or worse. There isn't any innovation in the movie, but running on an old formula seems to work well enough for director Chapman To.

My rating of "Let's Eat!" is a six out of ten stars. If you, like me, am a fan of the Hong Kong cinema, then you should sit down and watch this movie.
