Transformers: Cyberverse (2018–2021)
7/10
Decent entry to the franchise

Warning: Spoilers
It's nice to see an new Transformers series that takes place in a separate universe and not in the Alligned universe like the last few instalments.

However the series isn't perfect as I think it relies on nostalgia a bit too much. For instance a lot of the characters and designs feel like they came right out of the G1 show (even characters from Beast Wars and Robots in Disguise (2001) are used in this series ).

Not to mention that, especially after season 1, a new character comes right out of no where every few episodes and it treats it like we should know who these characters are and, even if we know a few, it feels like it's trying to push the toy sales of a specific character to the extent that they become part of the main cast. The animation is kind of a mix bag. Whilst not the worst, it's not unique enough to make itself stand out from previous Transformer series.

I also find it jarring that all 3 seasons of Cyberverse have completely different storylines that make it feel like they are all from different series.

Season 1 is about Bumblebee and Windblade trying to find the Arc where all the Autobots are in stasis whilst trying to avoid Decepticon seekers. Adding to this Windlbade tries to access Bumblebee's memories, as he has amnesia, and tries to remind him who he is whilst also trying to find clues that will lead them to the arc. This season is quite tame compared to the other seasons as it focuses on two Autobots and a few Decepticons. Not only that but this season also relies heavily on flashbacks that consist of Bumblebee's memories where we get a lot of backstory, not just on Bee as a character, but mainly on the War between Autobots and Decepticons on Cybertron.

Season 2 takes place serval months after the end of season 1 and has the Autobots and Decepticons trying to find the Allspark somewhere on Earth. Meanwhile a mysterious figure watches over them and later helps the Autobots as Starscream becomes hell bent on eliminating both Autobots and Deceptions with the power of the Allspark. This season feels much larger than the previous one due to it's massive cast of characters and this one introduces interesting story ideas from Cheetor being the guardian of the Allspark to Starscream calming to be the rightful owner of the Allspark and wishes to use it to remove all the sparks of his enemies and return them to the Allspark. (It's that kind of deranged thinking that make you love Starscream even more).

Season 3 starts immediately after Season 2 with the Autobots arriving at Cybertron to return the Allspark. But after a battle with the Decepticons, they must learn to work together to defeat an all powerful new enemy, the QUINTESSONS! Like season 2 this one has new story ideas that make the season very gripping to watch. From seeing the Autobots and Decepticons working together to the fascinating new origin of the QUINTESSONS.

As for the two films: the first one focused on Grimlock and his new team of Dinobots to defeat a new threat: the Mercenaries. The second one focused on the Autobots and Decepticons working together to combat Tarn and his army of perfect Decepticons. Both of these I thought were great specials, with the first one being a fun take on the Dinobots, Volcanicus and Trypticon, whilst the second one I thoght was a decent final to the series, with the stakes raised to fight a common foe.

So do I hate this series, no. Whilst the nostalgia of the characters and their designs. Not to mention the animation, keep it from standing out. I will say that the stories for the series are pretty interesting and they would keep you enveloped into the series until you find out how it ends. I do think the stories would have been told better in a 22 minute episode format instead of an 11 minute one, but that's just me. The specials are a good example of a longer runtime making an episode slightly more fleshed out.

Overall I think this is a very decent entry into the Transformers franchise and I would personally give it a 7/10. If you think the series Is a bit slow to start with then trust me, it gets better from there.
