LOVER'S DESTINY is an earlier work from prolific Shaw director Chor Yuen, offering a large canvas of characters and a story mixing equal parts romance, drama and even a little action. There are no less than three female starlets here, in the form of Li Ching, Ching Li and Shih Szu, while the villain of the hour is a brutal general played with relish by '80s comedy stalwart Stanley Fung in a surprisingly assured performance. I found the leads to be a little wooden and uninteresting, but the typical Shaw production values are outstanding and there's a nice supporting turn from Chen Kuan Tai, playing an acrobat who supplies what little action the film contains.
