Ariana Grande: God is a Woman (2018 Music Video)
4/10
The definition of feminism gone wrong
9 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
"God is a Woman" is a 2018 song written by American music starlet Ariana Grande and here we have the music video that goes with it. Director of these four minutes is Dave Meyers, a truly prolific music video director. Well, the title here makes the key message obvious. This is about feminism, or at least girl power. But if this is what girl power looks like today, then please bring me back 15-20 years in time when Spice Girls, TLC, peak Beyoncé and others were dominant in that department. I like Ariana Grande, don't get me wrong. She is as cute as a button and her voice has more recognition values than pretty much everybody else's from America's younger generation of famous singers these days, apart from Katy Perry perhaps. However, this one we have here is really shallow and an important subject like this deserves better execution, otherwise the intention results into the exact opposite that less people care about said important subject. The song is highly forgettable and not even catchy. The music video is okay at times visually, for example the clouds etc. but weak at others, for example it hits rock bottom when we see Grande with her hammer and of course with a helmet that has cat ears, her trademark. Like seriously? The argument that it should not be taken seriously as a whole and makes fun of itself is not adequate here. It's not the case. It wants to be defining, but with stuff like this I can understand why the Grammys keep snubbing Miss Grande and did so again this year for the most part. Noit worth seeing, even worth listening to. Skip "God is a Woman".
