Mere Apne (1971)
7/10
A superb film by Gulzar
27 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Gulzar made his directorial debut with this film, The film is a remake of Apanjan, but yet it's a great film to watch. It starts with Ramesh Deo who comes searching for elderly Meena Kumari(who was hardly 39 that time), so that he can get a free caretaker of his child and house, as he and his wife live in a city. Meena Kumari lost her husband Deven Verma who has a cameo The film then slowly moves into the city where 2 gangs Vinod Khanna and Shatrughan Sinha usually have gangwars. Strangely there is no heroine, except a fleeting romantic scene between Vinod Khanna and Yogeeta Bali. The film is well handled by Gulzar, throwing in a lot of soceital problems which make people do crimes.etc In fact N.Chandra's ANKUSH too had shades of this film.

Direction is superb Music by Salil Chaudhary is good, Koi Hota is brilliantly sung by Kishore, it's tune was used in Background score of ANAND which too had Music by Salil Chaudhary, Haal Chaal is a decent number again by Kishore

Vinod Khanna is excellent, conveying a lot through his expressions, Shatrughan Sinha is superb too, Meena Kumari in one of her last appearances before he untimely death a year later is good though her dialogue delivery is too melancholy perhaps due to her drunken habit in real life, Asit Sen is decent, Mehmood appears in a cameo as a politician, Deven Verma too has a cameo and is funny, Asrani is superb, his role is brief but he is good, he has good mix of serious and comic scenes, Ramesh Deo is good in a cameo, Keshtoo Mukherjee, A.K.Kangal make good cameos, Danny Danzongpa has a brief role and is good, Yogita Bali has a brief role and is okay, rest are okay
