Review of Harlow

Harlow (I) (1965)
6/10
OK Movie
22 March 2011
Warning: Spoilers
In the movie Carroll Baker was sexier than Harlow. Poorly done movie with several inconsistencies (I guess these are done to avoid lawsuits.) Harlow died of blood infection from a ruptured gall bladder since her mother refused to get her to a hospital because of her Christian Scientist beliefs. She didn't die at home in an oxygen tent with pneumonia as the movie leads us to believe. The big studio chiefs were Thalberg and Mayer. The latter, failed to intervene with her mother Mama Bello, since he held grudge against Harlow ever since she appeared in Washington on behalf of a democratic president when Mayer was a Republican (the true story that never made it was that Harlow rebuffed Mayer's advances-all from an intriguing book written about Producer Paul Bern-who was married to Harlow for only 2 months and ended up committing suicide or was it a murder?) The best acting is Red Buttons (he is the only one that should get a dinner!) Baker as Harlow, is bland in the first half with subdued emotions and persona. The movie is very superficial in the story telling and dialog. The last reel is poorly done. The sets and costumes are top rate and worth the price.
