Review of México 2000

México 2000 (1983)
10/10
Many vignettes about what Mexico City should be in the 21st century
29 October 2010
It's the year 2000. Finally, Mexico has entered the 21st century. Now everything works as planned, no more bureaucracy, citizens are nice and educated. No smog, no traffic jams, no crime. Since there's no crime, police work is to play heavenly music. Everybody is courteous and happy... Governmment offices personnel treat you like a king. Public transportation is a dream come true! With a heavy dose of black humor, all current (1983) issues are solved in this funny movie. Lechuga and Salinas are at their best, with a very good supporting cast, and dialogs both fluid and funny. The ironic humor and the obvious impossible scenes contribute to send a message to both society and Establsihment about an impossible dream: a Mexico free of all the corruption and dirt! Although it was only a fantasy, the message was widely discussed among young people. With a heavy use of both irony and humor, it's certainly a very enjoyable film, specially if you are well acquainted with the era.
