I am a massive Spongebob fan. I can quote entire episodes and can tell exactly which one people are talking about if I just hear one line of it. Yes, I am a Spongebob obsessive! But, I was quite disappointed with this movie.
The plot, though bizarre (and yet perfect for Spongebob standards), was good, as were the characters but, why did they have to add Mindy? She was just an excuse for Scarlet Johansson to have a part, but she was neither necessary or a good part of the movie. And the Neptune was entirely different from the one in the TV series, which is a shame because I liked him.
But what totally threw me, more so than Mindy and Neptune, were their voices. I know that they were voiced by the same people who did the show (Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, Carolyn Lawrence, Clancy Brown, Mr. Lawrence, and hey, the Flying Dutchman is voiced by Bill Murray's brother Brian Doyle-Murray!!!) but they're different. They've got a kind of high-pitched gravelly sound added so the sound gets right inside your head like nails on a blackboard.
There are some seriously classic lines and moments that will have you laughing (my favourite being the whole David Hasselhoff speedboat thing) and cry (when they dry up in Shell City, even the pirates find that bit sad!).
Some people would class Spongebob as a silly kids cartoon, but those people are incorrect - Spongebob is a cult phenomenon and will most probably live forever.
