The Mantis Project (1987 TV Movie)
8/10
isolation and tragedy
19 December 2005
i saw this as a child so my recollection of the story is SEVERELY limited... i do remember the feeling that it imparted, and it was very powerful indeed...

the story revolves around a test group that travel out to what i think is an old abandoned town... as far as I can recall, it's near the Kalahari desert in south Africa (but I could be mistaken)...

they have to survive together as part of a study. The group is very mixed, from a racial and age perspective (very interesting in a south African context)... naturally there is tension in the group, that gradually worsens as the effects of time and isolation set in...

there is additional pressure, that stems from a mysterious corrosion of normality... this is very subtle thing, and it is difficult to gauge whether it is the perception of the characters that is falling apart, or true supernatural influence...

some of the shots still haunt me, like the rocking horse in the upstairs attic of an old abandoned house... this is a very restrained series, and of genuine interest to those who enjoy psychological or supernatural thrillers...
