The story of the film takes place in Czechoslovakia in 1983 and is the story of Anna, a runner who hopes to participate in the Olympics and be selected for the national team. He is placed in a special government medical treatment where he is given anabolic steroids ("Stromba") by his trainer. His performance increases, but he later realizes the negative effect of taking steroids, which causes him to stop taking them.
Anna's father fled Czechoslovakia and moved to the West, which affects her mother as she cannot find a decent job. In addition, he is under constant surveillance by the Secret Service. He sees his daughter's participation in the Olympics as an opportunity for Anna to emigrate, so he secretly continues to inject her with steroids. She also ends up with her ex-love Mark, a political dissident, who types articles for her deemed hostile to the government, causing her more trouble with Secret Service agents. In the meantime, Anna falls in love and becomes more and more reluctant to emigrate.
