Cinematography / Animation
OFF THE BAT... the animation is incredible. Just like in Danmachi (Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?) the tone of how the animation will be is set from fight 1. But here's the thing, there's a scene OUTSIDE of fighting that will make your jaw drop. Because you wouldn't think such a scene could be animated they way they did it. Usually because they choose not to do so, they choose to focus on pivotal moments.
Editing
We have a story here. MC can't cast magic. Enrolls in Primarily Magic School and is ridiculed his entire time enrolled. His IQ is high, excellent with a sword, but his main flaw is lack of magic ability... and maybe trusting others too much. From episode to episode we follow him through school and through his training, relatively maintaining continuity. There is one sequence of episodes where I think that continuity is lost. Something happens but is overshadowed by another event and then not spoken about leaving the viewers to wonder what happened on their own.
Mise en Scene
The world around our MC is a world full of magic. He is the lone swordsman in a world full of mages. All his classmates are hostile to him because he is different. Everything around him is made or maintained by magic, which he cannot contribute to magically. But he also has others he can surround himself with that do not have magic, but they do not let others bother or ridicule them. Because of them being so accepting of him, he studies them and hangs around. (This may not be the main reason, but certainly A reason).
Performance
I enjoyed the portrayals of these characters by these actors and actresses:
Kouhei Amasaki & Minami Hinata(Will) Mutsumi Tamura (Fin) Houchuu Ootsuka (Oldeking Aron) Tetsuya Kakihara (Julius) Masaaki Mizunaka & Misato Matsuoka (Sion)
"Will" because of the way his frustration for being different and not having any magic. "Fin" for the way he expressed his displeasure with the principal of the school. "Oldeking Aron" gave off such a "Strong Ruler" tone upon making his entrance into the dungeon to save Will & his friends. "Julius" for his envy of Elfie. And "Sion" for his jealousy of Will. These actors and actresses portrayed each emotion very well and had me putting myself in each situation as I watched.
Sound
The sound design was really good. It matched the fighting, backstory, and non-fighting scenes very well. It set the tone for how a scene would end. The fight scenes with the clashing of sword with the magic, the feet hitting the ground... it really felt like you were immersed in the anime.
Overall this is an anime I would recommend to friends. It comes from the creators of Danmachi so if you didn't like that anime, then there was no way you were going to like this one either. However, both of these animes are ones to watch for sure. I think of the summer lineup, out of the new animes... this one was arguably the best.
