This is one of the few movies I've ever seen that is remarkably faithful to the novel. I read the novel years ago, saw this movie, and am just completing a re-read of the book.

The film is poetry just as the book is poetry -- lyrical, imaginative, harshly affecting and flowing with the pain and beauty of the lives it portrays. I would very much recommend reading the book before seeing the movie.

There has been a great deal written about slavery in America, but I think this is the writing that rings the most true. Please read the book and see this movie for yourselves.
