TOO LONG AND SLOW
12 October 1999
Too long, slow, detached and very literary drama by Bernhard Wicki who calls himself a "Bildermacher" (image maker). That is just what the problem is with the film (and others by Wicki): he re-tells the script (and thereby the novel on which the script is based on) and is a good director of the cast, but he never makes a film that is more than that. It can not be coincidence that he mainly makes adaptations of novels; this film looks and feels like the book coming to life rather than a real cinematic treatment of the material.

As to the story: did it have to be this long? Would not it have been a greater challenge to the viewer to dispense with the ongoing introduction and start when the main characters first meet? Cast is fine, cinematography average. Certainly worth a look though.
