Memórias de um Caracol

Grace and Gilbert are twins who lose their mother at birth and have an alcoholic father. They formed a stronger bonding as kids while Gilbert being her protector. Grace starts collecting snails as a child to cope up with her loneliness. After their father's death, the twins are separated and sent to foster homes. Grace gets a better life though is constantly lonely and fills the void with more snails. Gilbert gets a hard life with controlling matriarch who tries to oppress his rebellion. Grace has a guardian angel in the form of Pinky who looks after her. Will the siblings ever to get to be together and what lessons life teaches Grace? More importantly, how does Pinky explain life to Grace, forms rest of the story.

Adam Elliot has come up with a solid emotional story which instantly connects. Several times I kept thinking, if this was a live action film and not stop motion animation, I would have loved it the same. The strong siblings' bond is beautifully established early on and the film became an instant winner in those initial 20mins itself. Primarily it is the story of Grace and she anchors the story perfectly with the help of Pinky. The best of the dialogues are reserved for the final act and those lines were simply too powerful. Gilbert's sub plot is not undermined too in favor of Grace's. With a perfect balance of humor and emotional take on life, Memoir of a Snail is among the best film of 2024 and a must watch.
