Saimaa-Ilmiö was an 80s' documentary music film that captured some of the most popular Finnish rock bands of the time on their adventurous boat cruise tour. In 2000's a bunch of heavy metal/alternative rock bands wanted to do a similar tour and a movie about it.
Well, the bands here can't match the original. Instead of Juice Leskinen, Hassisen Kone and Eppu Normaali, this time we have CMX, Kotiteollisuus and 51koodia with some guest stars. These are ok bands but can't match the charisma of the bands on the first tour.
The dvd is divided in the documentary part which only has short clips from the concerts, and then you can also watch the concert part with full songs. I might have liked an option to watch them mixed (I think the preceeding film had it that way) - to watch the documentary and have the songs in between. Well, you have to video-edit it yourself if you want to put in that format.
Anyway, I thought the documentary was pretty good. Even though I'm not the biggest fan of these bands it was nice to hear them talk and fool around. The concert footage was ok but a little bit too...mediocre in my opinion. I mean, most of the bands play quite similar alternative metal that was popular in Finland in early 2000s. My favorite cuts were "Kuolleen miehen kupletti" by Viikate (the only song from them) and "Jos sanon" from Kotiteollisuus (one of the few Kotiteollisuus songs I really love.) Inclusion of the pop rock band Tiktak also brought nice variety to the show.
Overall: a nice documentary if you like rock movies but not as memorable as it's predecessor. But if you happen to love the particular style of heavy rock the bands included play here, then it's a must.
