Love this movie. It's not haut cinéma but it's a good time- especially great watch for 8-13 year olds. I grew up watching it- both my brother and I loved this film and recently rewatched it. Is some of it dated and melodramatic? Sure, but it's a lively flick and inspiring story.
Kids today need more stories like this- where the kid uses his head to triumph, rather than hoping a super hero will swoop in and save the day. Yes, the action is a little heavy (they're trying to kill the kid, after all) but the main character shows strength and grit in the face of danger.
I remember loving the nature shown in it- the wildlife, the river, even the foliage- and upon my recent watch, I found all of that just as beautiful as when I first saw it back in the 80's. Ignore the haters and check it out.
