As much as one is enthralled by the character of Zatoichi and Shintaro Katsu's stellar portrayal of our humble hero, I have to say that this entry in the series is somewhat of a disappointment. The story feels like a patchwork quilt that has been cobbled together from offcuts of old fare and rejected screenplays. How it has been edited also makes the film run like there are scenes missing, leaving many questions unanswered. The ending leaps upon us suddenly, but not like a tiger attack from out of the brush; more like an unexpected visit from relatives you wished were someone else's. All in all, it's not terrible (mainly because it's a Zatoichi movie) but it's not one with any rewatch value.
