This adaptation of the famous story, intended as a lavish TV production, was abandoned without being completed as a result of strike action; several of the actors, including Jason Robards, were subsequently unavailable because of prior commitments when producer Dan Curtis attempted to resume work on the project. As a result, Curtis and director Charles Jarrott started anew from scratch with a different cast and a new script, and the result was televised in 1968.
