Anders weathered a rough childhood and young adult life which not only encouraged an escapist penchant for making up characters but also an insider's sympathy for the strong but put-upon women who people her films. Growing up in rural Kentucky, Anders would always remember hanging onto her father's leg at age five as he abandoned her family. Traveling frequently with her mother and sisters, Anders would later be raped at age 12, endure abuse from a stepfather who once threatened her with a gun, and suffer a mental breakdown at age 15. Venturing back to Kentucky from Los Angeles at 17, she would soon move to London to live with the man who would father her first child. Upon her return to the US, Anders finally began to pick up the pieces of her life. She enrolled in junior college and later the UCLA film school and managed when a second daughter came along. Enchanted with _Wim Wenders_' films, she so deluged the filmmaker with correspondence that he gave her a job as a production assistant on his film Paris, Texas (1984). After graduating from UCLA, Anders made her feature writing and directing debut, Border Radio (1987), a study of the LA punk scene, in collaboration with two former classmates. Her first solo effort, Gas Food Lodging (1992), telling of a single mother and her two teenage daughters, and her followup, My Crazy Life (1993), looking at girl gangs in the Echo Park neighborhood of LA where Anders settled, have shown her to be a deeply personal filmmaker who has used her own experience to make grittily realistic, well-observed, gently ambling studies of women coming of age amid tough, sterile social conditions.

Besides being a zany comedian, Don Barclay ( born Donn Van Tassel Barclay) was an innovative caricaturist whose humorous depictions of celebrities can be found in countless art galleries, museums, bars and restaurants across the United States. His most famous drawing (entitled 'SkiNose', displayed at the Library of Congress) has a cherubic-faced, red jump-suited skier jumping off Bob Hope's nose. During World War II, Don toured North Africa, the Middle East, China and the Pacific as part of a USO one-man show, drawing caricatures of more than 10,000 servicemen as well as of high ranking military brass.

Don began his career as a cartoonist for the San Francisco Examiner then segued into comedy and burlesque. He was featured in the Ziegfeld Follies and Greenwich Village Follies of 1924, having previously worked on screen in silent comedies. He was a Keystone Kop sometime around 1914 to 1915. In 1918, he appeared in a series of one-reelers for Essanay which are now believed to be lost. His output in the 20s was sporadic at best, but in the 30s he was occasionally featured in short comedies for Hal Roach, including Air Fright (1933) (with Thelma Todd) and Mixed Nuts (1934). His remaining filmography consisted primarily of bit parts. From the early 50s, he was a voice actor for Walt Disney who apparently regarded him as something of a 'good luck charm'. His last featured appearance was as Mr. Binnacle in Mary Poppins (1964). Don retired to Scottsdale, Arizona, where he became a regular visitor to the local hangout, the Pink Pony, drawing caricatures of the regular patrons. He died in Palm Springs in October 1975, aged 82.

The son of a Methodist preacher turned insurance agent from Lumberton, North Carolina, Ray Salyer started out in life as a Boy Scout who, with his brother Roy, received a medal for saving a playmate from drowning in the local swimming hole. Ray grew up and worked as a carpenter; he married and subsequently enlisted in the U. S. Army before Pearl Harbor, serving through the duration of World War II. After war's end, he abandoned his family and, working on the railroads, and at various other odd jobs, eventually made his way north to New York City. Not much is known of his life after he finished the movie; it is known that he was severely beaten up by his fellow alcoholics due to his role in the movie; he was later found dead in an alley, having possibly choked on his own vomit. His family claimed his remains and took him home back to the Salyer family plot in Oakdale Cemetery in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Adamae Vaughn was born on November 8, 1905 in Ashland, Kentucky. Her older sister Alberta had been born in 1904. After their parents divorced their mother remarried and the family moved to California. Both sisters decided to pursue show business careers. Adamae made her film debut in the 1921 comedy short Stop Kidding. Then she had a role in the drama The Courtship Of Myles Standish (she was sometimes billed as Ada Mae Vaugn). FBO signed her to a long term contract in 1926 and she was cast as Tom Tyler's leading lady in The Arizona Streak. She married Albert Hindman, a contractor, in May of 1926. They were divorced a year later with Adamae claiming he drank too much and abused her. The couple reconciled in 1927 but they broke up soon after. She was chosen to be one of the 1927 WAMPAS baby stars. The beautiful blonde was so excited that she fainted at the ceremony.

Unhappy with the way her nose looked she decided to have plastic surgery. On June 17, 1934 she married her longtime boyfriend, automobile executive Val D'Auvray. The couple had been engaged for more than five years. While her sister Alberta Vaughn had became a successful actress Adamae's career never took off. Her final role was a bit part in the 1936 Carole Lombard film Love Before Breakfast. For a while she worked as a stand-in for actress Gertrude Michael. She divorced her husband and moved in with her mother, Martha, in Studio City. In April of 1937 she underwent abdominal surgery which left her with multiple adhesion's. This eventually caused an intestinal blockage and she was hospitalized in 1943. Tragically on September 11, 1943 she died at the young age of thirty-seven. Adamae was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.

The inspiration for the movie Days of Thunder (1990), Tim Richmond earned the nickname Hollywood Tim because of his passion to become an actor, a bug that bit him during a cameo appearance in the movie Stroker Ace (1983) with Burt Reynolds.

But Richmond became most famous for his explosive rise and tragic fall in NASCAR racing. The 1980 Indianapolis 500 rookie of the year, Richmond was involved in an Indycar crash where his car was sliced in two at Michigan International Speedway, and was persuaded by Pocono Raceway's Joseph Mattioli to try stock cars.

Richmond drove the 1981 season for some five different teams and finally achieved stability in 1982, winning his first two races. But his greatest success came when billionaire Charlotte car dealer Rick Hendrick slotted him into one of his racecars with crew chief 'Harry Hyde(II)'.

After a stormy opening quarter of 1986, Hyde and Richmond reached an understanding of each other's abilities and from late May onward were all but unstoppable, winning seven races, most of them in a ten-race span from mid-June to early September; only late-season engine failures cost Richmond a shot at the season title. His most spectacular win came at Pocono in July 1986; after crashing with 'Richard Petty' Richmond made up a lap and beat Geoff Bodine and Ricky Rudd in a three-wide photo finish.

But Richmond's health was deteriorating - he suffered a near-fatal bout with double pneumonia after the 1986 season and was literally begging doctors to save his life. Unknown to the sport at the time, Richmond also contracted AIDS (his doctor later said that Richmond, universally known in the sport as a playboy, contracted the disease via heterosexual intercourse, but there is still doubt in that regard), and despite his illness, he returned to NASCAR circles for an eight-race run in 1987 that saw victories at Pocono and Riverside, California.

Unaware of his illness other drivers suspected Richmond was a drug user, and persuaded NASCAR to test him. Two tests resulted during Speedweeks 1988, with contradictory results. NASCAR asked to see his medical records; Richmond refused and filed a defamation suit against NASCAR that was settled out of court when it was ruled that his medical records were relevant to the case.

Richmond was badly injured in a motorcycle accident in 1989 and finally succumbed to AIDS that August.

He has also appeared on stage as Horace Vandergelder in "Hello, Dolly!", the voice of Audry 2 in "Little Shop of Horrors", Ferris Layman in "The Diviners", Max in "The Sound of Music", Jacob Marley in "A Christmas Carol", the Roman sergeant Octavius in "The Choice", Satan in "He is Risen", and The Creature in "Frankenstein".
