An unlikely paradigm is playing out in social media: Unliking. It’s the antithesis of hoping you’ll always be right by my side. Is this progress? This Genesis story may shed some light.

In the beginning — like, way back in 2005 — media was massive, and it broadcast itself at us. You might say it had lived in the darkness of our wants for so long that it was…devoid — devoid of the nuance and subtleties that made it personal. Then, came social media, and, suddenly, we had choices.
We built our social networks by following people and things we liked. We felt so safe and so secure that we added accounts willy-nilly. And every day became such a perfect day to spend, alone, with our feeds.
It was a happy time. Ashton Kutcher raced CNN to see who could get to one million followers first. Spoiler: Ashton won; when he did,...

Republican Rep. Kay Granger, who has missed 100 percent of votes in the House since July 24, has been in an assisted living and memory care home, according to a report. Her staff denies that she is in memory care, with communications director Valerie Nelson telling Rolling Stone via email, “Kay Granger is not in Memory Care.”
Nelson also shared a statement from the congresswoman, who said she has been experiencing “unforeseen health challenges over the past year”:
I am deeply grateful for the outpouring of care and concern over the past several days.

Things got heated between co-hosts Sunny Hostin and Alyssa Farrah Griffin during the December 18 episode of The View. It was the lawyer versus the political strategist. The two clashed over whether Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-n.Y. was too progressive after losing her bid to head up the Democratic position on the House Oversight Committee. Veteran 74-year-old Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-va defeated Ocasio-Cortez by a 131-84 vote. Hostin argued the 35-year-old was demonized and “wanted to try to set the record straight. “If she is too progressive, then the Democrats really are losing the working class, because this is her platform. She then ready off key issues including “healthcare for all people. Affordable housing, rebuild the unions, federal job guarantee, free public college ….” Concluding, “if that is too progressive for this country, then that’s a problem for the Democrats, and that’s a problem, quite frankly, for this country.” Farah Griffin...

House Democrats on Tuesday voted for Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) to become the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, electing him to the key position by a vote of 131-84 over Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-n.Y.), who was also vying for the role.
House Democrats’ Steering and Policy Committee voted Monday night to recommend Connolly — who is 74 years old and was recently diagnosed with cancer — for the spot. The move was a hit for the 35-year-old Ocasio-Cortez, but she pressed on with her candidacy.

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-s.C.) introduced a bill on Monday that would prohibit transgender members of Congress and other government employees from using Capitol Hill facilities that match their gender identity.
The resolution arrives just over a week after Rep.-elect Sarah McBride (D-Del.) became the first openly transgender person to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.
When speaking to reporters, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Mace doubled down on the House resolution. “He’s a man, a biological male,” said Greene, referring to McBride.

Call it a blue wave. A host of actors, directors, musicians, journalists and other prominent people are dumping X (formerly Twitter) and flocking to social media platform Bluesky.
In the past week, an increasing number of bold-faced names have announced that they plan to post less on X, or leave the platform altogether, citing myriad issues with the social media company, including far right content, hate speech, transphobia, racism, harassment, pornography, crypto scams, bots and the political views of owner Elon Musk, the billionaire oligarch who is a vocal supporter and financial backer of Donald Trump.
Musk’s ownership of X and his updates to content moderation on the platform have been pushing brands and media groups closer and closer to the exit. At times, The View panelists discuss their opinions and fans completely agree. But there are other times that their sentiments fall flat with the audience. After Whoopi Goldberg attempted to relate to the American people, now she is getting backlash for her offensive and “tone-deaf” comparison.
Whoopi Goldberg Is Just Like Other People Struggling
Recently, The View moderator, Whoopi Goldberg, tried to relate to the American people about money woes. In some ways, Whoopi wants to leave The View, but she talks about how money is standing in her way. The topic came up as Whoopi reviewed Democratic New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s method of getting voter’s concerns heard. She had opened a Q&a on Instagram that begged people to help her understand how Donald Trump was re-elected. In her own way, she asked people to help her learn from the surprising outcome of the election.

The comic who caused a stir by slurring Puerto Rico as an “island of garbage” at Donald Trump’s Madison Square Garden campaign event in late October spent the subsequent episode of his podcast mocking the controversy and the media for treating the joke as a political liability.
“I apologize,” Hinchcliffe said on his Kill Tony live podcast with a small pause for impact at the top of the episode, “to absolutely nobody. Not to the Puerto Ricans, not to the whites, not to the Blacks, not to the Palestinians, not to the Jews and not to my own mother. I mocked my own mother during the set. Nobody clipped that. No headlines about me making fun of my own mother.”

Whoopi Goldberg has never been shy about the fact that her paycheck is a big piece of why she continues to moderate on “The View.” And on Tuesday morning, she reiterated that point once again.
The moment came as she and her co-hosts were discussing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s recent Instagram post, in which she polled followers that voted for Donald Trump but also voted for her or other Democrats on how they reached that decision.
For the most part, the answers included the economy as a major factor. And while the women of “The View” have been irritated that personal financial interests seem to have outweighed concern for marginalized communities, Whoopi conceded that she at least understands the logic, considering what motivates her.

One day after Tony Hinchcliffe’s controversial jokes at Donald Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally, Jon Stewart used his opening monologue on Monday’s “The Daily Show” to defend the comedian.
After highlighting other speakers at the rally like Tucker Carlson and Rudy Giuliani, Stewart said, “But of course, for the media there was one moment in particular that raised the alarms,” then played a supercut of network anchors criticizing Hinchcliffe’s jokes, which included calling Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage.”
Stewart then defended Hinchcliffe by saying, “Obviously, in retrospect, having a roast comedian come to a political rally a week before election day and roasting a key demographic … probably not the best decision by the campaign politically, but to be fair, the guy’s just really doing what he does.”

Donald Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden in New York was planned as a national moment for the former president’s closing campaign message and — much to the displeasure of some Republicans — it did exactly that.
Trump and his ilk have not been particularly quiet about their views on immigrants. In all seriousness, the so-called comedian was one of many speakers at a rally for Donald Trump at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night… opening for the racist President by trashing an entire U.S. territory.
“I welcome migrants to the United States of America with open arms. And by open arms I mean like this,” Hinchcliffe said at the event prior to waving his hands as if to say “go away.”
He then got far more lewd.
“These Latinos, they love making babies, too. Just know that they do,” Hinchcliffe continued. There’s no pulling out. They don’t do that.

Anyone feeling ‘sus’ about the upcoming Among Us series adaptation can rest assured the show will feature all of the game’s fun and gore.
That’s according to Owen Dennis, who is creating and exec producing the popular mobile game’s transfer to TV screens. He lifted the lid on the project in an interview ahead of his session at Italy’s Mia Market today. Deadline is moderating the talk, which takes place at the Cinema Barberini in Rome.
Per the logline, the series is based on the game’s premise: “Members of your crew have been replaced by an alien shapeshifter intent on causing confusion, sabotaging the ship, and killing everyone. Root out the ‘Impostor’ or fall victim to its murderous designs.”
A splashy cast includes Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey), Liv Hewson (Yellowjackets), Kimiko Glenn (Orange Is The New Black), Randall Park, Ashley Johnson, Yvette Nicole Brown and Elijah Wood.

More than three years ago, The New Yorker‘s unionized employees authorized and threatened a strike during a contentious first contract negotiation that culminated with scores of protestors descending on the Greenwich Village home of Condé Nast executive Anna Wintour days before a deal was ultimately reached.
Now, as the labor group is in the middle of negotiating a second contract with mother ship Condé Nast, it is applying similar pressure. In a vote that took place Wednesday, The Hollywood Reporter has learned, 100 percent of voting members of the bargaining unit opted to authorize a strike. According to the union, out of 101 eligible voters, 100 participated in the contest and voted yes.
A strike authorization vote does not mean a strike will occur, but it gives a union power to call one when it deems necessary.

New York City Mayor Eric L. Adams was indicted Wednesday following a federal corruption investigation, per the New York Times. As reported, the indictment remains sealed and it remains unclear what charges Mayor Adams will face.
Adams will be the first mayor of New York City to face criminal charges while in office. The indictment comes as the former state Senator and retired police captain’s administration face increasing scrutiny from the F.B.I. and federal prosecutors in an investigation that began more than two years ago, focusing on his 2021 mayoral campaign. The investigation became public knowledge last year, when the F.B.I. searched his chief fundraiser’s home.
“I always knew that If I stood my ground for New Yorkers that I would be a target — and a target I became,” Adams said in a statement after the indictment news broke. “If I am charged, I am innocent and...

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been indicted on federal charges expected to be unsealed tomorrow. That, according MSNBC, CNN, the New York Times and other media outlets.
The development makes Adams the first sitting mayor in New York City’s history to be charged while in office.
That Adams is under investigation has been known for some time. The Times has reported that the mayor faces three to four federal probes, one of which is tied to the government of Turkey. Investigators also sought information related to Israel, China, Qatar, South Korea and Uzbekistan.
Regarding Turkey, prosecutors were investigating whether Adams accepted illegal foreign donations in exchange for pressuring the Fire Department to approve a new high-rise Turkish Consulate in Midtown despite safety concerns, the New York Times said, and investigators have also examined his free flights and upgrades from Turkish Airlines.

There’s something compelling about the allure of nostalgia. And the Democratic National Convention, as it prepares to, Thursday night, usher in a candidate whose entire purpose has been to change the conversation, has defaulted, a bit, to reflecting on past glories.
Vice President Kamala Harris’ rallying cry, since she replaced President Joe Biden as the Democrats’ standard-bearer, has been “We’re not going back.” Her meaning is well-taken — the nation, in her view, ought not return to the days of the Trump presidency. The convention built around her and buttressed with figures from Democratic Party history, though, has seemed built around a different catchphrase. It has so far recalled the famous line from the drama “Lost” — “We have to go back!”
There’s nothing unusual about packing a political convention with former potentates from the party. It’s meant, in part, as a celebration of past glories that might be reclaimed.

Chicago — In one of the most moving moments of the Democratic National Convention, on Wednesday night, the parents of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, a 23-year-old American who was kidnapped by Hamas on October 7, took the stage at the United Center and spoke of the anguish they’ve experienced over the 320 days since their son was taken hostage.
They called for the release of the other hostages, including 8 American citizens, and for a cease-fire deal that “ends the suffering of the innocent civilians in Gaza.”

Chicago — Things were pretty quiet around the Auditorium Theatre in downtown Chicago on Tuesday morning — probably no surprise, given how late things went the night before. “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” kicked off a four-night run of live shows from the venue — part of the Roosevelt University campus — with an episode that didn’t get off the air until a little after 1 a.m. Central Time.
That’s perhaps why the Auditorium still seemed a bit dead around lunchtime — save one lone man sitting outside the theater and carrying two big backpacks. Either he was ready to wait for days until he could snag a ticket to the show, or he was a Roosevelt student who had picked that specific spot to sit and scroll his phone for hours.
Beyond that, pedestrians and Roosevelt students strolled past the Auditorium without giving much thought to the major late night talk...

The Democratic National Convention kicked off with a heavy dose of star power on Monday, with everyone from Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr to former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton speaking in support of Vice President Kamala Harris. But no one worked the crowd into more of a frenzy than Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-n.Y.).
“I’m here tonight because America has before us a rare and precious opportunity,” she said. “In Kamala Harris, we have a chance to elect a president who is for the middle class because she is from the middle class.

Joe Biden took the stage as the final speaker at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Monday night, with more than three minutes of applause and frequent chants of “We love Joe” from the audience. The 49-minute speech ran long during a night that was already behind schedule.
During the speech, audience members unfurled a banner reading “Stop arming Israel,” several attendees reported, and other people tried to rip the banner away. The disruption didn’t cause much of a ripple due to the vast size of the arena.
“We are in the battle for the very soul of America,” Biden said, reciting a long list of his administration’s accomplishments in infrastructure, health care, climate, jobs and manufacturing. “Union Joe,” chanted the audience as Biden spoke of his union support.

Stephen Colbert has reprised his alter ego, Donny Franks, for the Democratic National Convention, which officially kicks off today, Monday, August 19, at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. Franks is an enthusiastic hot dog vendor, who Colbert first played in a 2016 sketch on The Late Show.
