It’s tough being a teenager these days. Performing well at school, being confident enough to stand among the crowd, and showing great future potential are only a few things that put pressure on kids these days. However, it’s tougher being bulkier than others at school. You are not only under the pressure of meeting the unprecedented beauty standards set by social media, but you also have to deal with bullies who are eager to make you the butt of all the jokes they can conjure up from their insecurities. In Claire Ayoub’s “Empire Waist” Lenore (Mia Kalpan) is a plus-sized teen who, in order to avoid being on the other side of the jokes, revels in being invisible.

Exclusive: Blue Fox Entertainment announced on Tuesday that it will be bringing Wayfarer Studios’ body-positive, coming-of-age YA film Empire Waist, starring Mia Kaplan (Smilf), Rainn Wilson (The Office) and Missi Pyle (Captain Fantastic), to theaters across the U.S. and Canada on September 27.
Marking the debut feature of writer-director Claire Ayoub, whose script was ranked as the #1 Comedy on the Black List in 2019, the film follows Lenore Miller (Kaplan), an overweight, insecure teen whose talent for fashion is discovered by her confident, plus-sized classmate (newcomer Jemima Yevu), forcing her into the spotlight — and into the path of both bullies and new friends. Lenore’s father Mark (Wilson) is her biggest cheerleader, but the fears of her image-conscious mother (Pyle) and Lenore’s own insecurities prevent her from wearing her own designs. Will Lenore ever feel the self-love she inspires in others?

"Why would you allow yourself to feel that way?" Freestyle Digital Media has released an official trailer for an indie romantic comedy called Catching Up, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Bill Crossland. This first premiered at the Heartland and New Orleans Film Festivals last year. Bill Crossland also stars in the film as a romantically inexperienced young man with muscular dystrophy named Frank who struggles to win the love of his able-bodied crush while posing as a boyfriend for his closeted best friend. Crossland looks to be telling a very personal story, while also trying to have some romcom fun as well. The film's cast includes Francesca Carpanini, Isabella Pisacane, Johnathan Fernandez, Sam Daly, Jared Michael Delaney, Caroline Duncan, and Lydia Meredith. His main love interest in this looks a lot like Rachel McAdams. This seems like a very charming, brutally honest take on love as a disabled person.

"Following my method will get you where you need to go in the quickest route possible." Full Moon Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie drama titled simply Tape, the latest film by director Deborah Kampmeier. Based on true events and set in New York City, Tape is the story of an aspiring actress who crosses paths with the darker side of the entertainment industry. The film sounds a bit inspired by Harvey Weinstein (and Rose McGowan) and what he would make actresses go through. Here's a more compelling description: "This film addresses burning societal curiosities, taking the audience into the room where questionable behavior goes unseen, finally answering the question 'how could this kind of thing happen?' More than a film, Tape is a visceral moment-by-moment unveiling of the way ambitious and everyday women are systematically coerced and taken advantage of." This stars Isabelle Fuhrman, with Annarosa Mudd,...
