Levi Taylor enjoys a vibrant portfolio career as a film and media composer, a keyboardist, a piano instructor, and a youth and diversity advocate. As an undergraduate student, a James Millikin Scholar, and a Jere C. Mickel Human Relations Award winner, he founded a comprehensive diversity initiative called "Study Circles," which aimed to facilitate a dialogue between students of various backgrounds topics of diversity.
After completing his degree work, Levi spent three years in Fukushima, Japan, teaching English. He authored and developed a unique English curriculum for his town's four elementary schools, an after school adult class, and co-taught in their junior high school. A natural entrepreneur, Levi also actively performed and toured with gospel group "Aizu One Voice" and local blues band, Mascots. He is semi-fluent in Japanese.
An active community citizen, Levi has maintained a thriving and competitive piano studio in Ann Arbor since 2007. In addition to weekly lessons and two annual recitals, Levi engages many of his students in the Royal Conservatory Music Assessment program. Additionally, he consults with the renowned Faber institute on their pedagogical method and technologies.
As a composer, Levi was nominated for a Michigan Emmy twice for his score for the UofM documentary, "Racing with the Sun," and the mini-documentary, "The Arc of Justice." He authored the score for the award-winning documentary "Me, the Other," which premiered at the Michigan Theater to a sold-out crowd. The film received a proclamation from Washtenaw County's Commissioner and is now a feature for UofM's 2020 DEI summit. Levi is a frequent contributing composer for the international piano pedagogy publisher Faber and Faber and has created scores for central University of Michigan events such as the 2017 Bicentennial graduation ceremony held at the Big House. He has recently joined the notable ranks of composers signed with L.A. based media and film companies, Score a Score, and Th3rd Stream.
As a keyboardist, Levi performs extensively in music festivals, including Ann Arbor's Top of the Park, Harvest Gathering, Greensky, Blissfest, Hoxeyville, and beyond. He performs fusions of jazz, rock, and blues with artists like Madcat Ruth and social and environmental justice singer-songwriters such as Seth Bernard and May Erlewine.
Lastly, Levi is passionate about supporting youth through local non-profit initiatives. He currently (2021) serves as a board officer and secretary for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washtenaw County. Throughout his teaching career, he has offered free music lessons to youth in need. His future plans include launching his own foundation to enrich young people's lives through music, with an emphasis on underserved and systemically under-resourced youth within Washtenaw County.
