Cena and Alison Brie bring the genre up to date, with the pair comically adept enough to rescue this rescue mission from being a lame duck
This haphazard comedy-action film mostly plays like the script was written on the discarded roach of a smoked joint, but the likability of the cast makes up for a lot. WWE champ turned thespian John Cena, who always seems to know how weird he looks with his swollen torso and tiny hips, stars as soldier-turned-lawyer family man Mason Pettits. Having never got over the trauma of a mission that turned sour in the lamely named fictional Latin American nation of Paldonia, Mason nurses a sense of failure that’s undermining his marriage to wife Jenny as they try to raise a young daughter (Molly McCann) together.

‘Ghosts’ Producer Developing TV Version Of Podcast About Prolific British Con Woman
Ghosts producer Monumental Television is developing a TV version of a Global podcast about one of the most prolific fraudsters in British history. The indie has secured rights to Filthy Ritual, which is about Juliette D’Souza, who at the turn of the century wreaked havoc on a number of people’s lives until a rag-tag team of her victims came together to fight for justice. Described by her neighbors as being like ‘a knife in a velvet glove’, D’Souza claimed to have a special connection to an ancient source of power and wisdom deep in the Amazonian jungle, and she is said to have made at least £1M through extortion and manipulation. ITV Studios-backed Monumental makes BBC One smash Ghosts, which has been adapted for CBS, along with the likes of ITV’s Maryland and UKTV’s The Marlow Murder Club.

Pierre Morel’s Freelance follows disgraced American journalist Claire Wellington (Alison Brie) and her ex-military bodyguard, Mason Pettits (John Cena), as he escorts her to the fictional South American country of Paldonia for an exclusive interview with its dictator, Juan Venegas (Juan Pablo Raba). While the film starts out by presenting Paldonia and its leader as unrepentantly evil—among other things, we’re told that Venegas is responsible for the deaths of half of Pettits’s former squad years earlier—it eventually reveals that various imperialist forces and corporate-funded mercenary groups have been actively undermining Venegas as a means of forcing him to sell valuable natural resources for a cheaper rate.
That’s a surprising turn of events, especially for an action-comedy, given Hollywood’s typically simplistic representations of under-developed countries whose conditions are presented as justification for American intervention. Regrettably, that’s the only surprise to be found in Jacob Lentz’s screenplay,...

As we begin to pack away the holiday decorations and head back to the mall for the inevitable returns, this new release reminds us of those unfortunate families that aren’t lucky enough to tackle such minor inconveniences. In fact, the mother at the center of this story is completely left to her own devices, without a family aside from a violently abusive ex. She’s now part of the “system”, relying on the government to aide her with the housing of her two grade-school aged tots. In order to keep a roof over their heads she’s nearly drowning in “red tape” and “check-ins’ with often clueless “pencil-pushers”. But what if she somehow built that “roof” and freed her kids from moving from one temporary shelter to the next. But without professional laborers can she construct a home all by Herself?

Vivarium is a sci-fi horror film from director Lorcan Finnegan, who also wrote alongside Garret Shanley, who also penned the screenplay. We follow a young couple who are looking for a house, and find themselves buying a home in a development called “Yonder”. This new development is strange, empty and the guy showing them the house is a tad on the peculiar side too. When the guy showing them the house disappears, they attempt to leave Yonder, only to find themselves going around in circles, unable to find a way out.
The concept of the film immediately hooked me when I read about it a few months ago. The film doesn’t mess around either. You’re into the story and the flesh and bones of the idea within a few minutes,...

Amazon Studios has nabbed North American rights to Phyllida Lloyd’s “Herself,” an Irish drama about a woman who builds her dream house after escaping an abusive marriage, Variety has learned. The streaming service is planning a theatrical release for later this year.
The movie debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, where it enjoyed a warm reception and glowing reviews. Variety‘s Peter Debruge predicted that “Herself” could be a major awards season contender, writing, “I’m convinced this inspirational Dublin-set drama could go all the way. … Don’t be surprised if people are still talking about ‘Herself’ this time next year, when Lloyd could be the sixth woman to break the Oscars’ glass ceiling.”
Despite the reception, the Dublin-set film does present commercial challenges — namely, it lacks any big-name stars. Clare Dunne stars in the film and wrote the screenplay. She plays a woman with two adorable daughters (Molly McCann...

Carefully written on the inside of a child’s toy box made to look like a cozy country house, there is a simple message: a name, a phone number, and a desperate plea to call the cops, should said message ever be revealed. Sandra (Clare Dunn) has placed it there, knowing that the abuse she suffers at the hands of her husband Gary (Ian Lloyd Anderson) will one day veer into deadly territory, a last ditch idea for salvation. It’s that toy house that saves Sandra’s life, thanks to her trustworthy eldest daughter Emma (Ruby Rose O’Hara) running it to a local convenience store during her parents’ worst row ever, and it will be a real house that finally frees her in Phyllida Lloyd’s empathetic drama, “Herself.”

Various factors have set housing costs skyrocketing in many major cities worldwide, creating numerous problems — not least the increasing forcing-out of native residents in favor of better-heeled newcomers. Penned by Irish novelist Roddy Doyle, “Rosie” offers a microcosm of that crisis in Dublin, as a working-class family finds itself literally (if hopefully just temporarily) homeless.
The excruciating difficulties of being stuck in a car with four restless children all day, and no certainty of proper beds at night, are made all too vivid in this drama set over one 36-hour period. It’s not an experience many viewers will want to share, even vicariously, and the lack of star names will further limit commercial prospects. Still, Paddy Breathnach’s film is an admirable distillation of a jam happening to more and more people who never imagined being in such straits — and who, until recently, would have scarcely been at risk of it.

"I've always looked after them." Element Pictures has debuted an official trailer for the indie drama Rosie, made by Irish filmmaker Paddy Breathnach. The film is about a mother trying to protect her family after their landlord sells their rented home and they become homeless. Starring Sarah Greene as Rosie, with Moe Dunford, Natalia Kostrzewa, Ellie O'Halloran, Ruby Dunne, Darragh McKenzie, and Molly McCann. The film Rosie examines "how even in times of crises; the love and strength of a family can endure." This looks like another powerful story about the struggles of modern society and people we may not think much about, similar to I, Daniel Blake. It looks moving and heartfelt. This just premiered at Tiff, then opens in Ireland next month.
