The documentary “Survivor Made” lives up to its name. The film is made by domestic abuse survivors, for survivors. And because they know better than anyone the importance of sharing within a community, the filmmakers have taken a unique step in releasing it.
“Survivor Made,” which is directed by Drew Denny, is rolling out this month in special screenings across the country and will be made available for Tvod rental on November 22. But more importantly, the film will be offered for free to those in need or are unable to afford the rental price, and survivors will be able to watch it anonymously if they’re in unsafe situations at home.
To champion the film’s message, IndieWire can share exclusively that Padma Lakshmi is joining “Survivor Made” as an executive producer. She joins fellow EPs Roxane Gay, Alok Vaid-Menon, Debbie Millman, and Nava Mau, all of whom are likewise outspoken survivors of gender-based violence.

For an exclusive look at the documentary, watch the clip below.

The glamour is part of the work. When people ask Alok Vaid-Menon why they dress as they do, they answer “To live.” Why do other people not? Why do they feel that they have to wait for special occasions? Why don’t they enjoy expressing who they are all the time, celebrating the thrill of being alive?
Alexandra Hedison’s film, a very personal tribute to her friend, dazzles throughout. Even when speaking directly to camera, Alok wear eyeshadow that provides little bursts of vivid colour every time they blink. They. After seven centuries of use it’s finally gaining mass acceptance as a non-gendered third person singular pronoun, though it remains controversial – and yet, Alok says, by far the most controversial pronoun they use is we. A bigger deal than crossing traditional Western gender boundaries is blurring the lines between singular and plural: experiencing one’s own being as part of an extended.

Sony Pictures Television is widening the creative circle — by a lot — in its comedy division.
The studio has signed first-look deals with nine writers and comics — Scott Aukerman, Karen Chee, Shaun Diston, Chris Garcia, Chris Gethard, Lisa Gilroy, Lacey Jeka, Julie Klausner and Alok Vaid-Menon. They’ll all work on developing new comedy series projects and potentially collaborate with other writers and producers who have deals at Sony.
Lauren Stein, head of creative at Sony Pictures TV, and Colin Davis, executive vp comedy development, said the deals are part of an effort at the studio to bring in what Davis calls a “spectrum of sensibilities” to comedy development.
“The list is a collective of a different creators and multihyphenates that we believe each have unique voices and a hit show in them,” Davis said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “They really represent the comedy community at large, and...

It’s been just over two months since we learned the surprise news that the Sundance Film Festival could leave its longtime home in Park City, Utah when its contract with the city expires ahead of the 2027 festival. The Sundance Institute in April launched a formal process to determine where its next host city could be, and today, it wraps up a key step in that process.
Friday June 21 is the official deadline of Sundance’s Request for Proposal window, meaning cities that were selected by Sundance in the first window — the Request for Information — had to formally submit a bid outlining their plan complete with specific details about how they would support the festival in their city. The next step will be for Sundance to go through all the proposals and select its finalists, with a final decision coming between Q4 of this year and Q1 of next year.

The annual IndieWire Sundance Chili Party cooked up some fun on January 21 in Park City, Utah.
A staple of the Sundance Film Festival, the 2024 bash was presented by 1497 and SAG-AFTRA, with additional support by Rabbit Hole, and took place at the 1497 South Asian Lodge. IndieWire editor-in-chief and SVP Dana Harris-Bridson and publisher and SVP James Israel welcomed guests ranging from filmmakers to journalists alike.
1497 is an advocacy group supporting and uplifting talent of South Asian descent to challenge their historical exclusion from and underrepresentation in the American film and TV industry. “Alok” subject Alok Vaid-Menon was thus a perfect host for the event. In their speech, Vaid-Menon meaningfully spoke out on the new anti-trans Utah bill onstage, and talked about the importance of artists in a time of turmoil.

Kristen Stewart’s domination of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival continued at the Variety Sundance Cover Party presented by United Airlines, where Stewart was honored for her starring roles in two big festival premieres: “Love Me,” a post-apocalyptic romance film in which she stars opposite Steven Yeun, and “Loves Lies Bleeding,” an A24-backed crime thriller in which she played a reclusive gym manager who falls for a local bodybuilder.
“It’s hard to get here,” Stewart told Variety at the party about returning to Sundance, where she has premiered more than a dozen movies throughout her career. “Not because it’s an established and elite film festival, but because it supports marginalized voices. Voices that aren’t heard anywhere else. It’s a solidifying, communal feeling and it only makes you stronger to go back into a world of a ‘no’ and say, ‘I know that there’s a place for me.

The annual search for the next indie breakout has begun at the Sundance Film Festival. Actors, directors, writers, agents, producers and journalists all decked out in their best “mountain chic” have filled the (formerly) sleepy streets of Park City, Utah. Together they’ll sit elbow-to-elbow in the local theaters to witness what could very well be the next Oscar-winning thrill such as Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” or Christopher Nolan’s “Memento” (both former Sundance success stories).

Jodie Foster said at the Variety Studio presented by Audible while at the Sundance Film Festival that the $1.4 billion success of “Barbie” helps prove that Hollywood no longer views women directors as too much of a risk. That wasn’t always the case, as Foster often saw women filmmakers being marginalized during her career ascent in Hollywood.
“I’ve had the beauty of being able to be in the business since the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and so on,” Foster said to Variety’s Rebecca Rubin. “The progression or bettering of our audiences translates into a kind of new thinking about who our marginalized voices are. In the old days, they saw women as a risk. Not sure why they saw us as a risk — 50% of the population! That thinking has changed now. With a big success like ‘Barbie,’ they gave Greta Gerwig, who had made two mostly independent films,...

Alex Hedison was around three-quarters of the way through capturing the 40 hours of footage she would eventually collect of celebrated nonbinary Indian American performance artist, scholar and writer Alok Vaid-Menon when it finally became clear what angle her short doc Alok should take.
“At the time where I was trying to figure out what is it I’m trying to say, at that point, I probably had about 30 hours. I’d gone with them to South Africa. I followed them on tour in Namibia and different places in the U.S.,” Hedison tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Not only have they lived a very full life, but there are so many different directions to go with Alok. They’re brilliant. They’re a third-generation PhD student. They’re an incredible speaker, writer, poet, artist, performer, fashion designer.”

The upcoming third season of CBC and Max original comedy “Sort Of” will be its final season, co-creators Bilal Baig and Fab Filippo have announced.
The final eight-episode season will premiere in Canada on the CBC Gem streaming service on Nov. 17, releasing two episodes per week until the series finale on Dec. 8.
“We set out to tell a story about a kind of transition in Sabi’s life, and how those around them also change — and we feel in this coming season that story came to an end in a way that felt right for us,” Baig and Filippo said in a statement.
“Sort Of” follows Sabi Mehboob, played by Baig, a gender expansive millennial who is exhausted with changing themselves for the comfort of others. In the third and final season, the series will explore Sabi’s journey coming to terms with feelings of both grief and freedom after their father’s passing.

The ‘Cool for the Summer’ singer-songwriter Demi Lovato is back to using she/her pronouns in addition to they/them pronouns last year after announcing her non-binary identity in 2021. The singer decided so because it made her feel “exhausted” while explaining her gender identity to people, reports People magazine.
“I constantly had to educate people and explain why I identified with those pronouns. It was absolutely exhausting,” Lovato, told GQ Hype Spain, translated from Spanish to English. “I just got tired. But for that very reason I know that it is important to continue spreading the word.”
As per People, she also spoke about wishing there were more gender-neutral spaces for both artists and other people alike: “I face this every day. For example, in public toilets. Having to access the women’s bathroom, even though I don’t completely identify with it.”
Lovato continued: “Or it also happens when filling out forms,...

Ali Wong and Steven Yeun's standout performance in Netflix's "Beef" has many wondering if there will be a season two. The show, which follows the back and forth between a defeated contractor named Danny (Yeun) and a wealthy, overworked mom named Amy (Wong) after a road rage incident, ends with Wong and Yeun's characters basically destroying each other's lives. In the final moments of the season, we see Danny in the hospital fighting for his life after being shot by Amy's husband, George (Joseph Lee). We also witness a glimmer of empathy from Amy as she lies in bed next to Danny after losing everything.
"Beef" was initially billed as a miniseries, and creator Lee Sung Jin told Rolling Stone in April that he wanted the show "to have a conclusive feel just in case." He added, "But there are a lot of ideas on my end to keep this story going.

Since Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee signed a bill that would ban drag performers from staging “adult-oriented performances that are harmful to minors,” at least 14 states have proposed similar laws. Such legislation, separate but related to a broader skepticism and antagonism among Republican lawmakers toward trans-affirming care, taps into a centuries-long history in the U.S. — and in Los Angeles in particular — of government action against gender nonconformity.
In the nineteenth century in the United States, ordinances criminalizing “cross-dressing” existed at city and state levels. Initially, law enforcement used anti-masquerading laws to enforce the restriction of gender divergence. “This was part of a larger effort to really begin regulating people’s gender expression,: explains Dr. Eric Cervini, a Pulitzer finalist and historian focusing on LGBTQ+ politics. “These laws were originally constructed to prevent people from disguising themselves and rioting.”

Netflix will no longer distribute and Blumhouse Productions will no longer produce “Absolute Dominion,” a science-fiction martial arts drama from filmmaker Lexi Alexander.
Netflix greenlit the movie earlier this year, with Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Television banner on board to produce. It’s unclear why the two companies departed “Absolute Dominion,” but the filmmaking team is seeking new distribution. Principal photography took place this spring in Nevada. The project already wrapped filming, and it is currently in post production.
“Bill and Ted” actor Alex Winter, Patton Oswalt and newcomer Désiré Mia star in the violent, post-apocalyptic film, which takes place in 2085 A.D. after the world has been destroyed by religious warfare. Desperate to save humanity, global governing forces host a gripping, no-holds-barred, martial arts tournament. The last fighter standing wins Absolute Dominion for one faith.

Whew, it's been one heck of an exciting year for Jonathan Van Ness - yes, already. Just four days after Queer Eye's sixth season dropped, Van Ness shared a first peek at their forthcoming Netflix series, Getting Curious With Jonathan Van Ness. Inspired by his beloved podcast of the same name, the show follows the TV personality as he teams up with experts to learn about a wide range of topics and questions that pique his interest. The first season tackles subjects like skyscrapers, bugs, gender identity, and snacks (we told you the range was wide!), so there's truly something for everyone. Plus, as we see in the trailer Netflix released on Jan. 4, a handful of fellow celebs will be joining Van Ness, including retired figure skater Michelle Kwan, author Alok Vaid-Menon, and fashion designer Christian Siriano.

From every group reality show comes a new star. When Netflix premiered its shiny new “Queer Eye” redux in 2018, an internet crush was anointed in guacamole chef Antoni Porowski, but the true charmer was obviously Jonathan Van Ness. The tinsel-tongued hair flipper introduced the world to a more fluid view of gender presentation for people assumed to be men, slowly and deliberately challenging gender norms with a charming wit and open playfulness. Often working the runways of middle American households in skirts and heels, Van Ness came out as non-binary in 2019 and has since become the most high-profile femme presenting non-binary person.
As their star rose, Van Ness capitalized on their newfound notoriety to build their personal brand, penning a memoir and continuing their solo podcast “Getting Curious,” which launched in 2015 and is still going strong. (The last episode of 2021 featured an interview with queer singer Brandi Carlile.)

Demi Lovato has come out as non-binary and will be using the pronouns they/them.
Lovato shared the news on Instagram, writing, “Today is a day I’m so happy to share more of my life with you all — I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary and will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward. This has come after a lot of healing and self-reflective work. I’m still learning and coming into myself, and I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson.

It didn't take long for far-right commentators like Candace Owens to make their thoughts known about Harry Styles wearing a dress on his historic Vogue cover. Candace tweeted, "There is no society that can survive without strong men." She then went into a diatribe about "the steady feminization" of men in Western society before ending her rant with a plea to "bring back manly men."
Far-right commentators weren't the only ones to take issue with Harry's cover, with members of the LGBTQ+ community questioning why Harry was chosen to be the symbol of progressive gender fluidity. There's a difference between the kinds of critiques each group is making. Conservatives focusing on the ignorant idea that certain clothing items are gender-specific is unwarranted. The LGBTQ+ community's concern over whether Harry is accurate representation, however, shines a light on the bigger issue within the fashion industry.
