Apart from trying to avoid back-to-back Stephen King, trust me, he will be coming back this year as its kind of inevitable, I also like looking at modern horror adaptations. This is two-fold as the internet has done the 80s and 90s to death but also because there are some genuinely original and fantastic IPs that have yet to get the spotlight they deserve. The most recent example of this is The Ruins which is a horror one hit wonder from Scott Smith, yeah, he did other things but that was his only horror novel, and that’s a cool and original piece. The Ritual wasn’t one of those immediate releases where the book was churned into a movie before the book had time to cook and it is the only adaptation from a very U.K author’s works. While the movie did extremely well on Netflix and...

Autumn and horror naturally pair well together. The cooling weather, changing leaves, pumpkin patches, and, of course, Halloween ensure that, for the horror fan, it’s difficult to separate the two. This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to horror movies that embrace an Autumnal atmosphere, with many set around Halloween proper.
These picks leave off some of the more prominent Fall horror movies, like Sleepy Hollow (Max) or The Blair Witch Project (Paramount+), to pad your watchlists with less obvious choices.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers – AMC+, Shudder
After sitting out the previous entry, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, Michael Myers returns to Haddonfield once more on All Hallow’s Eve with murder on his mind. This time, the Boogeyman targets his telepathically linked niece, Jamie Lloyd (Danielle Harris...

My to-be-read pile is shamefully big, but that never stops me from adding more. I cherish getting lost in a good book, but a novel is more of a commitment than chipping away at movies on my to-watch list. The conspicuously titled 101 Horror Books to Read Before You’re Murdered may make that stack of books to read even more intimidating, but it also helps narrow down which tales of terror are worthy of being moved to the top.
Following a foreword by Bird Box author Josh Malerman, writer Sadie “Mother Horror” Hartmann explains why you should trust her choices implicitly. As the owner of the horror fiction subscription service Night Worms and the editor-in-chief of publisher Dark Hart Books, she’s an unassailable authority on horror literature — even if she’s a self-proclaimed scaredy cat who rarely watches genre movies.

It’s a new month, and we’re officially in the back half of 2023. That also means that it’s a new month for streaming. Netflix’s horror offerings might be light when it comes to new releases, the most notable of which is Bird Box Barcelona, set to debut on the streaming service on July 14.
Whether you’re looking for underseen horror gems on Netflix or revisiting spooky favorites, here are ten great horror movies you can stream on Netflix in July.

With “The Cloverfield Paradox” all but a distant memory at this point, Netflix has released its latest original horror film: “The Ritual,” which is earning mixed-to-positive notices (which, to be fair, is better than most genre offerings). David Bruckner (“Southbound,” “V/H/S”) directed the movie, which is now streaming. Here’s what those coastal-elite critics have to say:
Katie Walsh of the Los Angeles Times is for it:
“‘The Ritual’ is efficient and highly effective in its style, relying on sound, creepy production design, and the men’s own fear and misjudgment to create the sense of pervasive doom. We don’t see the monster in too much detail, leaving the mystery intact, but the creature design is stunningly original.”
Henry Stewart‘s review for Slant is less enthusiastic, but still fairly positive:
“‘The Ritual,’ based on the novel by Adam Nevill, is besieged with strange happenings, including Runic-like symbols carved...

Exclusively arriving on Netflix this Friday is The Ritual from filmmaker David Bruckner, who has directed a variety of great genre projects over the last 10 years, including The Signal (which you’ll definitely hear more on later this month for its upcoming anniversary), V/H/S, and Southbound. For his latest movie, Ritual, Bruckner has adapted Adam Nevill’s novel of the same name. The film follows a group of friends (led by Rafe Spall, Hot Fuzz, Prometheus, Life of Pi) as they take a hiking vacation in honor of their friend who recently died, but their trip takes a sinister turn once they realize they’re being stalked by an unseen malevolent force that will stop at nothing to ensure they suffer greatly.

It's no picnic for bears in these woods
Down in the deep dark woods, you never know quite what you might find. The Ritual, adapted by screnwriter Joe Barton from Adam Nevill's 2011 novel, follows a group of men whose holiday hiking trip sees them veer off the trail to take a short cut through a forest after one of their number is injured. As night falls and the shadows lengthen, a series of sinister incidents convinces them that there's something else there in the dark, watching and waiting for its moment to strike.
David Bruckner made his name with Southbound and The Signal before working on this film. "The Imaginarium had been developing the movie for quite some time. I read a draft that they had been working on and then I read the book immediately after that and got involved from there," he told me.

David Bruckner’s The Ritual is a harrowing blend of fierce and folksy horror, but also comes with a tingle of Fomo. How, you ask? Track back to 2007, when Bruckner teamed with Dan Bush and Jacob Gentry to dial-in their shared narrative The Signal (three directors, three “transmissions”). Between then and The Ritual we’ve seen two Bruckner visions in the form of (fan favorite) anthology segments – “Amateur Night” (V/H/S) and “The Accident” (Southbound) – yet no solo project. Quite simply, The Ritual is too tight and polished for a “feature-length debut,” but that’s what it *technically* is. Genre fans, we’ve been robbed of boatloads more Bruckner these past years (case and point: where the Hell is Brucker’s Friday The 13th).

Another day, another movie about a group of friends that venture into the woods where awful and nightmarish things await them. Yeah, this kind of movie is a dime a dozen, but this one actually looks really good! Netflix produced the film, and after watching this trailer, I can't wait to check it out.
It's movies like this that make going camping and exploring in strange mysterious woods and other places so exciting! You think I'm joking, but I love exploring stuff like this in real life! If I came across woods like this with crazy markings on the trees I'd be the first to run in and starting exploring. I haven't been killed by any creatures or anything yet, so that's a plus!

The shadow of The Blair Witch Project certainly looms large over any Horror movie that ventures into the woods. Be it the countless Found Footage capers set inside a dark, treacherous, vegetative coated hell on earth or the other entries in the genre that feature young people lost at nature being dispatched by something gruesome and (mostly) unseen. So doing something different with the setting is a big ask but we’ll settle for just an interesting addition to the pile and while The Ritual is flawed and not exactly original, it boasts something many of its ilk do not…strong characters.
Starting with an unexpected but thoroughly interesting narrative set-up, The Ritual immediately grabs your attention with a ruthless moment of realistic nastiness, which leads onto the plot ahead. Nordic Noir takes a dark detour into pagan folk-horror in The Ritual, a superior B-movie shocker set in the hinterlands of northern Sweden. Based on a prize-winning 2011 novel by British author Adam Nevill, this holiday-from-hell yarn was shot in Romania by American director David Bruckner, graduating to full-length features after several well-regarded contributions to horror anthologies. London-based Imaginarium Studios, co-founded by Andy Serkis, developed and produced the project with backing from Entertainment One.

MaryAnn’s quick take… A horror movie for grownups, dripping with the dread of a fairy tale of yore, primitive and atavistic, drawing on profound human pain and fear. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): I usually don’t find horror movies scary
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Life lesson from The Ritual: There’s no such thing as a “shortcut” through a deep dark ancient forest. Four British friends, former university pals — Rafe Spall (Swallows and Amazons), Robert James-Collier, Arsher Ali (Doctor Who), and Sam Troughton (Vera Drake) — are on a hiking weekend in a hilly Swedish wilderness when one of them hurts his knee, badly. But cutting through the woods — the lodge is right on the other side, according to their map — turns out to be, er, a really bad idea.

Rafe Spall stars in an efficient horror film with obvious hints of Deliverance and The Blair Witch Project
The Ritual is an efficient, well-made if programmatic Brit horror, with good effects and a big monstrous reveal intelligently withheld. It is adapted by Joe Barton from a 2011 bestseller by Adam Nevill, and directed by David Bruckner – who worked on the very interesting and creepy compilation movie V/H/S.
A group of guys go on a hiking weekend in a remote Swedish wood – they are Luke (Rafe Spall), Hutch (Rob James-Collier, who deserves more than to be known only as Mr Barrow from Downton Abbey), Phil (Arsher Ali) and Dom (Sam Troughton). They’ve been mates since uni and going away together is a tradition with them. But one of the gang is missing, having been killed during a robbery in a late-night shop after one of their lads’ nights out,...

Fans of horror literature have likely encountered Adam Nevill’s work. His novel The Ritual, a combination of occult fantasy and survival horror, has been ripe for adaptation since its release the better part of a decade ago. Few modern directors are better suited for the job than David Bruckner, the man behind the infamous surgery segment in Southbound. When it premiered in Tiff’s Midnight Madness section, early reactions gave no indication that Bruckner had returned to the feature scene with a debut of mythical power, but his faithful adaptation of Nevill’s novel revives the folk horror sub-genre to give us one of the year’s most terrifying films.
The setup is deceptively simple, with four friends embarking on a hiking trip through Sweden in honor of their deceased fifth member. When one of them twists an ankle, they make a mistake that may cause a few eye-rolls:...

Heading into cinemas today is The Ritual - but is it any good? Glad you asked...
Four old friends convene for a hiking trip in Scandanavia, attempting to pay tribute to the fifth member of the group, while the trauma of his violent death wisps into their lunges and clouds their relationships like heavy smoke. When one of the gang injures his knee they decide head home early and take a shortcut through the woods, which - and if you’ve seen a horror film before you might be able guess this - turns out to be a bad idea. The woods are creepy and it becomes increasingly difficult to rationalise the strange things they’re seeing and experiencing. Particularly when it becomes apparent they’re being watched by someone, or something.

Mixing up a bit of witty banter with terrifying scenes, the debut trailer for The Signal’s David Bruckner’s next project, The Ritual, has landed.
Starring Rafe Spall (The Big Short, Life of Pi), Robert James-Collier (Downton Abbey, Spike Island), Arsher Ali (Line of Duty, Four Lions) and Sam Troughton (Robin Hood, Alien vs. Predator), The Ritual tells the story of a group of friends who take on a hiking holiday in honour of a friend who was murdered at the hands of a criminal. What lays ahead of them in a remote Scandinavian forest proves it might not have been the best idea they’ve ever had.
The trailer begins with the two friends in conversation before Rafe Spall dips behind the shelving of a shop in the midsts of a violent robbery. With his friend dying at the hands of one of the robbers,...
