Some of the entertainment industry’s leading ladies celebrated The Hollywood Reporter‘s inaugural Women in Entertainment Canada event in Toronto on Thursday.
The all-day gathering at the Park Hyatt Hotel was attended by stars like Nia Vardalos, Lilly Singh, director Kari Skogland, Devery Jacobs and Catherine Reitman. “I’m not sure what the requirements are for being an icon, but I’m 67, and I’m rocking with that,” Kim Cattrall said when accepting the Icon Award at the Wie Canada Tribute Awards.
“Congratulations to all the other honorees. It’s amazing what women can do when we come together,” the Sex in the City star added. The event, which coincided with the publication of the Canadian Women’s Power List, focused on driving efforts to achieve gender equity and career breakthroughs for Canadian women in front and behind the camera.
“Load up your slingshot. Put three rocks in there.

When Mr. & Mrs. Smith was announced as a TV series for Prime Video in 2021, there were plenty of reasons to be skeptical about the project.
It was based on a movie of the same name that did reasonably well but isn't especially well-remembered.
The announced starring duo of Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge was intriguing, especially considering that both performers were credited as creators.
Both had a history of starring in and creating successful series, including Glover with Atlanta and Waller-Bridge with Fleabag. Plus, Waller-Bridge served as the showrunner in the first season of Killing Eve, another prestige series about an assassin.
But then Waller-Bridge dropped out of the project just a few months after it was announced due to "creative differences," with Maya Erskine replacing her as the show's female lead. Glover and Francesca Sloane are credited as the co-creators.
Beyond that, the series had its premiere delayed repeatedly,...

In honor of International Women’s Day, IndieWire is pleased to share its annual female filmmakers to watch list featuring a rising assortment of women writers and directors with some of the biggest projects of the year.
On the big screen, Theda Hammel’s Sundance breakout “Stress Positions” went on to become a leading title on this year’s New Directors/New Films lineup and is set to close out the festival. Alessandra Lacorazza’s “In the Summers” won the Grand Jury prize at Sundance, and also earned Lacorazza the Directing prize. Cazzie David and Elisa Kalani co-wrote and co-directed SXSW selected film “I Love You Forever,” which is produced by Diablo Cody.
While David also co-stars in the film, another actress makes her directorial debut with a similarly sinister premiere: Anna Kendrick directs and stars in “Woman of the Hour” based on the haunting true story of the “Dating Game” killer.

As a horror fan, I was delighted that 2023 not only delivered some top-notch genre films but also that there were enough directed by women to create a 10 best list. Women created a diverse array of horror from psychological thrillers to over-the-top gore comedy to creature features. They looked beyond just final girls to create fascinating, flawed, and sometimes deeply disturbed characters.
I measure progress not by how many positive female characters we get on screen but rather by the diversity and depth of the women driving the stories we see. Kudos to the female talent in front of and behind the camera that created these bold, original works in 2023.

Considered the master of ‘body horror’, Canadian auteur David Cronenberg is the singular talent behind nightmarish classics including Videodrome, The Fly, Scanners, Shivers and more. Dead Ringers, which was loosely based on the lives of Stewart and Cyril Marcus, saw Jeremy Irons’ twin gynecologists descend into a codependent hell. It’s nigh-on perfect so a remake for TV, ‘but this time with women’ wasn’t necessarily a welcome concept.
Perhaps against the odds then, this version is excellent, expanding on the themes, going hard on the horror and showcasing the talent of Rachel Weisz who scorches the screen throughout.
As in the film, she plays twin gynecologists Elliot and Beverly Mantle, brilliant doctors wanting to revolutionize fertility and the childbirth processes. With backing from Jennifer Elhe’s wealthy investor the twins open a bespoke birthing center meant to destigmatize pregnancy and women’s bodies – the clients are referred to as ‘guests’ rather than patients because,...

Plot: A modern take on David Cronenberg’s 1988 thriller starring Jeremy Irons, Rachel Weisz plays the double-lead roles of Elliot and Beverly Mantle, twins who share everything: Drugs, lovers, and an unapologetic desire to do whatever it takes—including pushing the boundaries on medical ethics—in an effort to challenge antiquated practices and bring women’s health care to the forefront
Review: The 1988 thriller Dead Ringers starred Jeremy Irons in the dual roles of Elliot and Beverly Mantle, identical twin gynecologists who succumb to vanity, addiction, and obsession. The film is one of director David Cronenberg’s more restrained productions yet still features disturbing body horror imagery in a unique take on Bari Woods’ novel Twins. It is hard to imagine how anyone could remake Dead Ringers without existing in the shadow of Cronenberg’s film. Yet, showrunner Alice Birch and star Rachel Weisz have stunningly reinvented the tale with...

Oscar winner Rachel Weisz, and Rachel Weisz, dominated Canneseries on Saturday, as the audience gathered at the Lumière Auditorium in Cannes broke into spontaneous applause after the first scene of her new show “Dead Ringers.”
Premiering in main competition, the six-episode limited Prime Video series – created by Alice Birch – played with the viewers’ emotions all throughout its first two episodes, eliciting frequent laughs and delivering more expletives than Logan Roy monologues, but also causing a few walk-outs, seemingly provoked by its detailed depictions of childbirth and medical procedures.
“Dead Ringers” sees Rachel Weisz play twin sisters Beverly and Elliot.

“Dead Ringers” is inspired by the 1988 David Cronenberg film starring Oscar winner Jeremy Irons as the identical doctors. Irons won Best Actor honors from the Chicago Film Critics Association and the New York Film Critics Circle, and the film was a runner-up for Best Picture at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

What’s better than Rachel Weisz? Two Rachel Weiszes. The Oscar-winning actor is playing twins in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming “Dead Ringers” series, and the streamer now has double the footage with the release of the full official trailer for the show.
The series is based on David Cronenberg’s 1988 psychological thriller film, which starred Jeremy Irons as Beverly and Elliot Mantle, identical twin brothers who run a successful Obgyn clinic. Weisz plays gender-flipped versions of Beverly and Elliot, but the twin’s disturbingly close relationship — down to sharing lovers and drugs — remains intact. The trailer, set to Soft Cell’s 1981 synth cover of “Tainted Love,” teases a very different storyline compared to the original film, focusing on the twin’s experiments to change the very way women can give birth — pushing against basic medical ethics in the process.
“You want me to grow you a baby out of nothing?...

The first official trailer for Prime Video’s modern take on David Cronenberg’s “Dead Ringers” has arrived, with the feminist twist we’ve been craving.

Kevin Hart is back with a thirst for fame in the official trailer for “Die Hart 2: Die Harter,” which the Roku Channel dropped today.
Hart plays a fictional version of himself in the comedy series, which follows his quest to become a renowned star of action films. When Season 2 kicks off, Hart is attempting to establish a reputation as the greatest action star of all time by developing an avant-garde unscripted feature. But his plans are soon foiled when an enemy from his past intervenes.
The new trailer previews what’s to come, along with a first look at series newcomer John Cena’s character. Cena plays a Hollywood stuntman who goes by the moniker “Mr. 206,” and is introduced to viewers holding a crossbow. The grizzly performer changes his tune once he sees Hart, immediately asking, “How do you like your tea?”

Although we recently got our first look at the upcoming David Cronenberg remake "Dead Ringers," we hadn't actually gotten to see any of the bizarre action to come on Prime Video. Luckily, that has now changed, because the streamer has released its first, albeit very brief look at the limited series. Don't expect to spot any major plot details with this 40-second teaser, but you will spot two very different Rachel Weiszs in bloody lab coats. You may think you know why if you saw the 1988 David Cronenberg original starring Jeremy Irons, but will that be the case with this new take? Who knows! Regardless, this teaser has us sold.
What we do know is that Prime Video's take on "Dead Ringers" looks appropriately moody and downright creepy. Come on, if you are adapting a Cronenberg work, you need to embrace the weirdness that is so synonymous with his stories.

I’m not sure if the world is ready for double the Rachel Weisz. Prime Video has released the first teaser trailer for Dead Ringers, a new psychological thriller series that puts a modern spin on David Cronenberg’s original movie.

David Cronenberg's work can never truly be replicated, but that doesn't mean it can't be modernized. One of his movies best primed for re-interpretation is "Dead Ringers," his 1988 psychological thriller starring Jeremy Irons in dual gynecologist roles. The film has frequently been considered one of the best Canadian films of all time, landing on the Toronto International Film Festival's decennial curated Top 10 list. While certainly a great movie, it can be argued that some of its themes may be better explored with a few changes.
Thankfully, "Dead Ringers" is about to get a new lease on life thanks to Prime Video. The streamer has released new details about its series adaptation of the film, directed by such big names as Karyn Kusama and Sean Durkin. While this adaptation has been in the works for a few years, it's actually coming to our screens closer than you may realize. Here's...

Dating app Tinder is expanding the scope of its original series “Swipe Night” for its second season, which is designed to engage users in a “Gen-z whodunit.”
Following a successful first outing in 2019 — both in viewership and love matches — Tinder is adding more storytelling finesse to the series in its second outing as the digital brand experiments with narrative content to drive membership and usage.
While Season 1 was an interactive journey about the last day on earth, the new episodes will focus on what the company is billing as a a murder mystery designed to match Tinder users based on their hunches about an unfolding crime. Adding more tech juice to the experience is the recent feature Fast Chat, which allows users to connect and share clues and theories without having sparked a formal match.
In step with the first season, users will dictate the narrative flow through a series of plot choices.

When we think of strippers, we’re pretty quick to judge. Still, even in this day of #MeToo and TimesUp, of expanding sex workers’ rights and pole dancing classes available for suburban moms, we see a stripper’s outfit and immediately think we know all about them. But displaying bodies doesn’t have to be innately sexual. In fact, it can be powerful and provocative in ways that don’t have to do with sex at all. Costume designers Rita McGhee and Alita Bailey knew from the get-go that creating the looks for Starz’s “P-Valley”—a show that brings empathy, sincerity and honesty to the story we all think we know—was going to be a welcome challenge rooted not in sex, but in female power.
“For us, it was about learning the story, learning who these women are, their characters and diving into that world,” McGhee said in a recent interview with IndieWire.

For “P-Valley” creator and showrunner Katori Hall, going to strip clubs was simply part of her Southern coming-of-age experience growing up in Memphis. When Hall was on the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, she explained how those experiences were the polar opposite of how strip clubs are commonly portrayed in popular culture, especially in movies and television.
“You saw athletes on the pole, you didn’t see sad broken women,” Hall said. “And so, for me, that was like, ‘Boom, I know this an art form, and yet people don’t understand this particular art form comes from these Black women down in the South.’ It is this culture, it is this vibe, is truly something to be explored and discovered.”
Hall first creatively explored this side of stripping — especially how it can often be a source of economic freedom and self-expression — in her play of the same name (except the p-word...

Exclusive: Lyne Renée (Motherland: Fort Salem) is set for a recurring role in HBO Max’s Gossip Girl reboot. The 10-episode series comes from Joshua Safran, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s Fake Empire, Alloy Entertainment, Warner Bros TV and CBS Television Studios.
Like the original series, the new iteration of Gossip Girl, written by Safran, is based on the book by Cecily von Ziegesar. Eight years after the original website went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens is introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl. The prestige series will address just how much social media — and the landscape of New York itself — has changed in the intervening years.
Renée will play Helena Bergman, a cold as ice global real estate magnate and former top model, who is the mother to Otto “Obie” Bergmann (Eli Brown.)
In addition to Brown, the series stars Jordan Alexander,...

Gossip Girl may have gone dark in 2012, but the site will have a whole new look when the series is rebooted later this year.
HBO Max on Friday dropped the first teaser for the highly-anticipated update of The CW drama, and they're a good lucking bunch.
But will they be a match for the likes of Serena, Blair, Nate, Chuck, and the others who dominated the original series?
We'll need to tune in to find out!
The teaser shows the cast at what looks to be a party, and the scene is perfectly narrated by original star Kristen Bell.
What we learn from the trailer is that Gossip Girl is, once again, watching every move of teenagers, reporting on what happens in their everyday lives.
Will this new iteration stir the pot?

HBO Max has dropped the first teaser for its “Gossip Girl” reboot series, featuring a new crop of teenage Upper East-Siders being surveilled by the titular, mysterious blogger. You know you love her (already), because the voice is that of Og “Gossip Girl” narrator Kristen Bell, who is reprising the audio-only role for the updated take on The CW teen drama.
“You’ve gotten so comfortable,” Bell’s Gossip Girl says over footage from the upcoming show, featuring stars Jordan Alexander, Eli Brown, Thomas Doherty, Tavi Gevinson, Emily Alyn Lind, Evan Mock, Zion Moreno, Whitney Peak and Savannah Lee Smith. “Thinking you’re in control of your image, your actions, the narrative, that you forgot one thing: I can see you. And before I’m through, I’ll make sure you see you, too. Xoxo, Gossip Girl.”
Oh, crap.

The social media page unveiled the cast and characters set to grace the screen when the reboot hits HBO Max. Like the original series, the new iteration of Gossip Girl, written by Joshua Safran, is based on the book by Cecily von Ziegesar. The logline: Eight years after the original website went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl. The prestige series will address just how much social media — and the landscape of New York itself — has changed in the intervening years.
Each post featured the new Gossip Girl cast members, their characters and their most important traits. For Jordan Alexander’s Julien Calloway, influence remains a priority. Whitney Peak’s Zoya Lott values perspective while Thomas Doherty’s Max Wolfe prizes freedom.
