Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film reviews for the new releases “The Blackening,” a tart horror/comedy directed by Tim Story and the mystery comedy/romance “Maggie Moores(s), directed by John Slattery. Both In theaters since June 16th.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
“The Blackening” makes fun of the trope that the African-American character is often the first to die in horror movies by placing an all-Black group of friends in the proverbial cabin in the woods, during the Juneteenth weekend. There are confronted by a masked killer who demands that they rank their “degree of blackness” so that he can determine the correct order in which to kill them, and the cabin dwellers must rely on a combination of street smarts and their own knowledge of black history and horror films to survive.

Fans of quirky, darkly comedic murder mysteries should find Maggie Moore(S) to be a worthy descendant of films like Fargo and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri that is right in their wheelhouse. In a small town that sees little crime, Police Chief Jordan Sanders (Jon Hamm) and his semi-useful deputy Reddy (British comedian Nick Mohammed) find the body of a young woman named Maggie Moore. Her husband is grieving but it’s not clear if he’s sincere. Before they can solve that crime, another Maggie Moore around the same age turns up dead. Her husband also seems suspicious, although for completely different reasons. The two women didn’t know each other, or have any identifiable connection, but Hamm suspects the killings of blond Maggie and brunette Maggie must somehow be intertwined.

Jon Hamm can’t help but gush over Tina Fey!
Et spoke to Hamm at the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of his new film, “Maggie Moore(s)”, about his co-star and his role in the upcoming “Mean Girls: The Musical” movie.
“Tina is a very confident and capable actress, she’s an amazing person. We’ve known each other for a long time now, and I think we respect each other’s talent and abilities and what we bring to the table,” Hamm said when asked about his on-screen chemistry with Fey.
Directed by Hamm’s “Mad Men” co-star, John Slattery, the film sees Hamm as Police Chief Jordan Sanders, who unravels a web of small-town lies while investigating the bizarre murders of two women with the same name. He meets and quickly falls for Rita (Fey), a nosy neighbour who’s eager to help solve the mystery.

It is always an occasion for celebration when Jon Hamm and Tina Fey are back together on screen — big or small — having shared credits on various 30 Rock and SNL episodes (and the upcoming film version of Fey’s Mean Girls). But their latest collaboration is a clear departure, as well as a rare chance to see Fey out of her comedic zone.
Directed by John Slattery, Hamm’s multi-Emmy-nominated Mad Men co-star, Maggie Moore(s), which world premiered Monday night as part of the Tribeca Festival Spotlight Narrative section, is on paper an extremely clever premise for a murder mystery. When one woman named Maggie Moore is found murdered, the man responsible for the hit job (who also happens to be her husband) stumbles on to yet another woman with the exact same name living just a few blocks away in the same small American town. There are actors who direct films, and there are those who establish themselves as real-deal filmmakers. In the first category we find John Slattery, a fine actor who, after a respectable career as “that guy,” reached a new level at age 45 thanks to Mad Men. The AMC series was still on the air when Slattery directed his first film, God’s Pocket, in 2014, and he returns now, nearly 10 years on, with the dark comedy Maggie Moore(s). Following his on-screen reunion with Mad Men co-star Jon Hamm in last year’s Confess, Fletch, Slattery here casts the actor in the lead role as Jordan Sanders, a lonely police chief investigating the connection between the murders of two women, each named Maggie Moore.
The first Maggie to die (played by Emily Blunt) is married to Jay (Micah Stock), the owner of a restaurant franchise who plans to become the Howard Schultz of submarine sandwiches.

"I pretty clearly said 'scare her', not 'set her on fire!'" Screen Media has unveiled an official trailer for the indie film titled Maggie Moore(s), the second feature directed by actor John Slattery (his directorial debut was God's Pocket with Philip Seymour Hoffman in 2014). This is premiering at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival in June before it opens in limited theaters later in June. Maggie Moore(s) takes place in a dusty desert town where nothing ever happens, as a police chief is suddenly faced with the back-to-back murders of two women with the same name. (Hence the title of the film.) Who did it and why? Jon Hamm stars as police chief Jordan Sanders, who must deal with all kinds of small town shenanigans and secrets. The cast includes Tina Fey, Micah Stock, Nick Mohammed, Happy Anderson, & Mary Holland. The trailer has a darkly comedic edge to it,...

There have been many horrible bosses in movies that have shaken us to our very cores (looking at you Priestly), but it's safe to say that Little's Jordan Sanders takes the cake. Played to perfection by Regina Hall, Jordan starts her day terrorizing everyone, from her next door neighbor to local baristas and her own long-suffering assistant, April (Issa Rae). In a very The Devil Wears Prada-esque moment, April actually tries to warn her colleagues that Jordan is on her way, but there's no hiding from the boss when she wants to find you. And Jordan's anger is like a heat missile, constantly aimed at her terrified employees.
Her reign of terror is abruptly cut short when she meets the business end of a wand and wakes up in the body of her 13-year-old self. A modern reversal of the classic 1988 comedy Big, the film follows a similar formula...

What if you could return to a time in your childhood and relive your life from that point knowing what you know now? That’s the fantasy at the core of Universal’s “Little,” released April 12, in which Regina Hall’s Jordan Sanders, a character overwhelmed by the pressures of adulthood, gets the chance to relive the life of her younger self, played by Marsai Martin in an oversize wig.
Writer-director Tina Gordon crafted the fluid look of the fantasy comedy in close collaboration with Dp Greg Gardiner and editor David Moritz. Gordon and Gardiner spent their weekends walking through sets and locations, discussing blocking and playing roles including Hall and Martin’s Sanders while acting out the scenes together.
“Greg played everyone in blocking,” says Gordon with a laugh. Among the scenes: a striptease with Luke James’ character, Trevor, and a separate dance atop a bar by Martin.

Just two months after a self-absorbed ambitious businesswoman of color got zapped with an unusual ability in What Men Want, we’ve got another woman (though much more abrasive) getting a “Twilight Zone-style” upgrade. Well, makeover is more like it. An extreme one for certain. Perhaps in tribute to the passing last year of the multi-talented Penny Marshall, we’re seeing another variation of her greatest directing smash, Big. My initial thoughts on Little, after watching the trailer, were optimistic. The trailer was funny and I was hoping that it wouldn’t be another case of the funniest parts being in the trailer. Thankfully, that concern in the back of my head was squashed within the first two minutes of this movie.
The plot of Little is straight-forward. After being bullied as a teen, Jordan Sanders decides to bully people before they get a chance to bully her. It’s an attitude that has gotten her far in her career but not in her personal life. At work, she makes her employee’s lives incredibly difficult and she is that boss you either dread having or hate working for.

Little sees a well worn story given new life via a fizzing script and clever performances, despite suffering from a bloated middle act and an overriding air-of-inevitability.
Bullying made Jordan Sanders (firstly seen as Marsai Martin) yearn to be a grown up. She concluded that as an adult she could step away from childish name-calling, teenage hierarchies and thrive in her own right. Most importantly, she could be a boss, and never be in the same position again. Flash forward twenty-or-so years and Sanders (now played by Regina Hall) is the abrasive, volatile and single-minded boss of her own company.
Yet Jordan’s craving to be big has also seen her revert back to childhood in small ways. Prone to tantrums when things don’t go her way, it is often left to her doting assistant April (Issa Rae) to pick up the pieces. But when a frisson of magic...

Alternately smarmy and achingly familiar, Little squeezes Big for one more run through the Hollywood grinder. (For starters, Shazam! does it better.) Long before America’s childhood bullying epidemic made headlines, Hollywood had taken the issue to heart, making it a standard ingredient of Ya films to condemn the mistreatment of misfits by mean girls, jocks, rich kids, and cool cliques. But the movies have largely ignored the reverse phenomenon, in which those who once identified as outcasts grow up to become perpetrators of an even worse kind of conduct when they get big. One need look no further than Silicon Valley to see how some personalities use whatever wealth and power they acquire as adults to avenge the abuse they endured in their early years.
Well, “Little” lets such bullies have it, addressing precisely that problem via the tried-and-true body-transformation genre — which has given us teens in adult bodies, adults in teen bodies, and parents and kids trading places, with seemingly infinite variations on the formula. Well, not exactly infinite: Until now,...

The simple desire to be seen and valued is usually something we discuss regarding adults, often in terms of onscreen representation and in our romantic and professional lives. Rarely do we talk about what that really means through the eyes of children — specifically, a young girl today who knows she’s got #BlackGirlMagic but is still treated like a pariah among her peers.
That’s what makes director Tina Gordon’s “Little” so special. Through its heroine, the movie engages audiences in a narrative that at its core is about all of our purest intents: to feel loved, to be heard and to be good.
So it makes sense to begin the story when bespectacled Jordan Sanders is 13 years old; honest, smart, and with her heart always in the right place. It’s the night of her school’s talent show, and she is sure she’s going to win...

The word on Tina Gordon’s “Little,” a slapdash modern inversion of “Big,” is that “Black-ish” star Marsai Martin came up with the idea for the movie when she was only 10 years old, and became the youngest executive producer in Hollywood history when the thing actually went into production a few years later. That’s a nice bit of trivia, but “the hacky premise for this studio comedy was pitched by the child star of a network sitcom” may not be the strongest hook for a PG-13 comedy that’s aimed at adults (though also still appropriate for older kids). If anything, it sounded like a chintzy excuse to soft-pedal another lazy remake at a time when audiences are desperate for original fare that rewards their decision to leave Netflix at home for the night.
And maybe it was. The finished product won’t exactly disabuse you of your most...

A dictatorial tech entrepreneur is magically transformed into her younger self in this confused comedy with little to laugh at
Last year, at the age of 13, child star Marsai Martin (from the TV show Black-ish) made Hollywood history by becoming the youngest ever executive producer of a studio film – this one. She was inspired by the Tom Hanks classic Big, and had the idea for a new twist on this fantasy comedy, which has been brought to the screen by director and co-writer Tina Gordon.

Girls Trip’s Regina Hall and Black-ish’s Marsai Martin both star as Jordan Sanders — Hall as the take-no-prisoners tech mogul adult version of Jordan and Martin as the 13-year-old version of her who wakes up in her adult self’s penthouse just before a do-or-die presentation.
Insecure’s Issa Rae plays Jordan’s long-suffering assistant April, the only one in on the secret that her daily tormentor is now trapped in an awkward tween body just as everything is on the line. Little is an irreverent new comedy about the price of success, the power of sisterhood and having a second chance to grow up — and glow up — right.
Will Packer, blockbuster producer of Girls Trip, the Ride Along franchise, and ten movies that have opened No. 1 at the U.S. box office, including Night School, No Good Deed and Think Like a Man, brings an all-new perspective to the body-swap comedy.

Jordan then turns back into her 13-year-old self (Martin), who must relive her childhood. In an interview with The Root, Martin confirmed that the movie is inspired by Tom Hank's 1988 classic Big. "It was one of my most favorite films growing up," she said. "After the [season one] finale of Black-ish, we told Kenya Barris about it, and he called Will [Packer] and said: 'Yo,...

"Jordan - to everyone else you're a child, so you have to start acting like it." Of course she's going to learn some lessons along the way. Regina Hall & Marsai Martin both star as Jordan Sanders, with a cast including Issa Rae, Justin Hartley, Tone Bell, Caleb Emery, and Jd McCrary. This seems like it might just be a whole lot of fun to watch. Take a ...
