Inspired by the real life of singersongwriter Alyssa Robbins, the film follows a Brooklyn musician named Becks Lena Hall who, after a crushing breakup with her girlfriend, moves back in with her Midwestern mother Christine Lahti. As she navigates her hometown, playing for tip money her old friend Dave's Dan Fogler bar, an unexpected relationship begins to take shape. Driven by an original score by Alyssa Robbins, the film's musical numbers bring a unique new voice to the American musical movie.

The Los Angeles Film Festival that ran from June 14 to June 22 handed out its prizes today. Becks, the story of and inspired by Alyssa Robbins took home the U.S Fiction Award Prize.

Certainly this appealing character-driven musical deserves to find an audience. The lesbian central character should ensure exposure on the Lgbt festival circuit, but the cast and the music are so engaging that the film could resonate beyond that niche market.
