The Decameron is a medieval black comedy series created by Kathleen Jordan. Based on the 14th-century Italian short-story collection of the same name by author Giovanni Boccaccio, the Netflix series is set in 1348, when the Black Death was destroying Florence. It follows the story of a few nobles who lock themselves away with servants in a countryside villa. In the beginning, everything goes swimmingly but soon something turns their retreat into a fight for survival. The Decameron stars Zosia Mamet, Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Tanya Reynolds, Amar Chadha-Patel, Leila Farzad, Lou Gala, Karan Gill, Tony Hale, Douggie McMeekin, and Jessica Plummer. So, if you love the wild comedy and historic setting in The Decameron, here are some similar shows you could watch next.

Elle Fanning (“The Great”) released an image of her character Catherine the Great on Instagram looking positively glowing. “Cooking up something special for season 2,” Fanning teased about her pregnant Empress character in the Season 2 first look photo (see below).
Hulu followed up her pic with a caption of their own that read, “In season two, Catherine becomes both a mother to Russia and a child.” But who’s the father to Catherine’s unborn baby: Nicholas Hoult‘s Peter III of Russia (her husband), Sebastian De Souza‘s Leo Voronsky (her lover) or someone else entirely? Stay tuned.

“The Great” had a great SAG nominations morning, landing bids in Best Comedy Ensemble and Best Comedy Male Actor for Nicholas Hoult, but the empress herself was robbed. Elle Fanning did not get an individual citation for Best Comedy Female Actor for her turn as Catherine the Great, despite racking up Critics’ Choice and Golden Globe nominations for the performance. So why the discrepancy, SAG Awards?
See ‘The Crown’ leads 2021 Golden Globes nominations with 6, followed by ’Schitt’s Creek’ with 5
Admittedly, Best Comedy Female Actor was a tough category to crack this year, with the five slots taken up by Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy from “Schitt’s Creek,” Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini from “Dead to Me” and Kaley Cuoco from “The Flight Attendant.” Thankfully for Fanning, she does technically have a nomination this year as part of the ensemble for “The Great,” so it is far from a disappointing day.

We’ve got a slick new IMAX poster for Ghost in the Shell featuring Scarlett Johansson as The Major laying someone out with a brutal beatdown. When talking to Empire about the character she plays, Johansson said:
“She’s living a unique experience as somebody who has an idea of who she thinks she was, and then who she is now, and the person that she feels she is, this sort of gnawing feeling she has in her ghost. Being able to play those three sides: the ego, the superego and the id... That was pretty enticing.”

Paramount has released 8 new motion posters today for the hotly anticipated live action version of Ghost In The Shell. The anime adaptation, due for release March 31st, has been gradually gaining buzz following its impressive Super Bowl teaser trailer and with just over a month to go until it debuts, excitement is, understandably, quite high.
The new motion posters feature Scarlett Johansson’s Major Motoko Kusanagi, the first “full body prosthesis” cybernetic human, and the seven members of her elite Section 9 special ops team, played by Takeshi Kitano, Danusia Samal, Pilou Asbaek, Yutaka Izumihara, Lasarus Ratuere, Tawanda Manyimo and Chin Han.
The film, which appears to closely hew to the 1995 anime original, follows Major and Section 9 has they hunt for an enigmatic hacker known as the Puppet Master. A cut above most anime, Ghost In The Shell takes an imaginative and intelligent look at identity in an increasingly technologically advanced society.

Contrary to online speculation, Paramount Pictures is currently holding fire on releasing new footage for Ghost in the Shell, but that hasn’t stopped the studio from stoking the embers of excitement with mind-bending viral videos.
Designed to be similar to those promos that booted online late last year, the latest, all-too-brief snippet hails from Paramount’s official YouTube page bearing the ominous caption: “They did not save her life; they stole it.” They are, of course, referring to Major Motoko Kusanagi, the kick-ass synthetic to be played by Scarlett Johansson in Ghost in the Shell. She’s a one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid and the flagship product of Hanka Robotics, the conglomerate that deploys Johansson and the remainder of Section 9 to clean up the city’s crime-ridden streets. Up above, you’ll see the ways in which the Digital Mind promo blurs the line between human and machine.

I was really hoping that this movie would turn out to be great, and judging from this trailer, there's a good chance that fans are going to get a hell of an incredible film. Steeped in a particularly potent brand of cyberpunk, as promised, the first full trailer for Ghost in the Shell has debuted online, welcoming Scarlett Johansson in the kick-ass role of Major Motoko Kusanagi – or The Major, for short.

Though Hollywood currently has several magna adaptations in the works, Alita: Battle Angel, Adam Wingard’s Death Note and the long-rumored Akira reboot, to name but a few, it’s Rupert Sanders’ Ghost in the Shell that seemingly has people most excited. With Scarlett Johansson’s name on the masthead, it’s easy to see why that is, and though the marketing campaign for the film has yet to kick into high gear, the cogs are definitely starting to turn.
Earlier this week, we caught a peek of Johansson in action as Major Motoko Kusanagi in the stylish first teaser, where the actress’ elite cyborg heroine delivered a sucker punch to an unsuspecting thug. Earlier this week, we caught a peek of Johansson in action as Major Motoko Kusanagi in the stylish first teaser, where the actress’ elite cyborg heroine delivered a sucker punch to an unsuspecting thug. Cloaked in some form of invisible technology, the leader of Section 9 truly looked the part as she began to crack down on the city’s crime levels.

The Hollywood adaptation of the sci-fi classic Ghost in the Shell will hit theatres on March 31, 2017. Executive producer Michael Costigan says that the upcoming live-action will be faithful to the manga. Although, producer Avi Arad says that they will pick and choose what elements they’ll include from the source manga or the previous TV and film adaptations.
In an interview for Collider.com, Arad sheds light on the movie’s plot:
“It involves Kuze. The Kuze story. The big thing we are doing here is that we’re not necessarily doing an origins backstory, but we are addressing her sense of self and resolving how she defines herself in terms of memories. That’s one of the main thrusts in the story. Inspired by that episode of Affection in Second Gig. It’s bits and pieces of those mixed together.”

Most of the conversation that I’ve seen among fans regarding the upcoming live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell is the controversy over Scarlett Johansson’s casting in the lead role. I’ve already shared my thoughts on why that might be the case here. Regardless of how you feel about her casting, the movie is happening, and judging from the series of brief teasers that I’ve seen it looks like it’s going to be awesome!
For those of you who are fans of the manga and anime, you might be wondering what storylines from the source material director Rupert Sanders used for his movie. All we’ve had to go off of so far is the following brief plot summary:
Ghost in the Shell follows the Major, special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists,...

With Scarlett Johansson’s name on the masthead, Ghost in the Shell is perhaps the most buzzworthy of Hollywood’s in-development manga adaptations. It’s also much further along than Alita: Battle Angel, Adam Wingard’s Death Note and the long-rumored Akira reboot, with a release date already pinned down for late March.
Cries of whitewashing notwithstanding, that means there’s a hushed excitement swirling around the Rupert Sanders-directed feature, not least because it’ll have Johansson flaunting her action skills once more as Major Motoko Kusanagi, an elite cyborg who spearheads a military team known as Section 9. With an international ensemble in tow, Sanders has pulled together all the necessary ingredients for a crowd-pleasing actioner – on paper, at least – but while chatting to Collider, Scarlett Johansson dove a little deeper to discuss the director’s world-building process.

Based on the Japanese manga by the same name, the film is set to star the very caucasian Scarlett Johansson, and people. are. Pissed.
Perhaps in a bit of ingenious damage control, the crew behind this new live-action Ghost In The Shell recently called in some giants from the property's past to help smooth things over. Production I.G. recently tweeted a photo that revealed that Mamoru Oshii, Kenji Kamiyama, and Kenji Kawaii had all visited the Hong Kong set of Ghost In The Shell. The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that Rila Fukushima has closed a deal to join Paramount’s live-action rendition of Ghost in the Shell.
Best known for her involvement across both Wolverine and Arrow, the outlet didn’t disclose which character Fukushima would be playing in the 2017 feature, but news of a Japanese actress being drafted in for the high-profile adaptation is certainly promising, even if skeptics still lambaste Ghost in the Shell for whitewashing its preliminary cast.
Whatever your stance, in light of today’s casting, that ensemble now includes Scarlett Johansson in the role of the Major, a deadly human-cyborg who spearheads an elite task force known as Section 9. Meanwhile, there’s also parts for Michael Pitt as key villain The Laughing Man, Beat Takeshi Kitano as Daisuke Aramaki and Juliette Binoche as Dr. Ouelet. Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures have released the first photo of Scarlett Johansson as Major in their co-production live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell. Shooting has started in Wellington, New Zealand, and the press release came with this official synopsis:
Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, “Ghost In The Shell” follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.
I've never read the original manga series or seen the anime feature, so I'm going into this one with very little context. Hopefully director Rupert Sanders (Snow White and The Huntsman) will focus more heavily on the story this time around; I'm still interested in seeing him put his visual skills to good use,...
