“Earth Abides” is a six-episode limited series adapted from George R. Stewart’s 1949 novel of the same name.

Billy Burke, best known for his appearance in the “Twilight” series of movies, is set to play the lead in upcoming horror thriller “Outbreak.”

The zombie genre film, directed by Jeff Wolfe who co-wrote the screenplay with Lance Ochsner, has now been acquired by Premiere Entertainment Group (Peg), a Los Angeles-based production, financing, and sales company, which picked up international rights.

“Outbreak” follows a state park ranger (Burke) in search of his missing teenage son who is confronted with zombie-like people carrying an infectious disease following a virus outbreak. Alyshia Ochse, Taylor Handley, Raoul Max Trujillo, Jessica Frances Dukes, Dani Oliveros, and Kylr Coffman round out the key cast.

WolfePride Productions’ Jennifer Wolfe and Jeff Wolfe produced the film with Kevin Matossian for SilverCrest Entertainment.

Premiere Entertainment has launched talks with international buyers on “Outbreak” at the American Film Market. Premiere CEO Elias Axume and acquisitions manager Lizzy Gonzalez negotiated the deal with the producers.

Amazon MGM Studios is doubling down on its original film business.

The studio arrives at MIPCOM Cannes with nearly all its eggs in Earth Abide‘s basket, an original series starring Alexander Ludwig (Vikings) and Jessica Frances Dukes (Ozark). The show is a post-apocalyptic tale, based on George R. Stewart’s 1949 novel, about the fall of civilization from deadly disease — which Chris Ottinger, head of worldwide distribution, Amazon MGM Studios, says represents “a lot of the feeling of now, when it’s a very strange time to be on this earth.”

The executive sat down with The Hollywood Reporter in Cannes to discuss the studio’s slate of shows and films getting their distribution launch at MIPCOM including the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale, The Accountant 2 and the sequel to A Simple Favor.

Exclusive: Earth Abides will land in Australia on the same day as it premieres on MGM+ in the U.S.

The limited series has been snapped up by Australian streamer Stan from Amazon MGM Studios Distribution, which shops the show internationally.

Earth Abides is based on the post-apocalyptic sci-fi novel by George R. Stewart. It follows events after a vicious plague sweeps the globe and the human race is all but wiped out. In the U.S. the series will premiere Dec. 1 on MGM+ with Stan premiering the same day.

Amazon MGM Studios Distribution heads to content market Mipcom, Oct. 21-24, with a lengthy slate of series and films. Martin (Evil) will play Madame Dashkova, a medium who claims to be able to commune with the dead. Wever (Unbelievable) will take on Monica O’Brien, Bertha Russell’s (Carrie Coon) estranged sister who appears at a crucial time for the family.

Season 4 of the Gary Oldman-led espionage drama “Slow Horses” will return to Apple TV+ Sept. 4 with a two-episode premiere. Based on the novel “Spook Street” by Mick Herron, the series follows Oldman as Jackson Lamb, a pessimistic intelligence agent who must lead M15’s dumping ground department known as Slough House after a career-ending incident.

Per an official logline, the new season “opens with a bombing that detonates personal secrets, rocking the already unstable foundations of Slough House.”

“Slow Horses” is adapted for television by Will Smith (“Veep”) and produced by See-Saw Films. For aspiring filmmakers, appreciators of how the sausage is made and lovers of atypically blunt reality messiness, “Project Greenlight: A New Generation” is essential viewing. From the Max reboot’s welcome focus on inclusive expansion, its gutsy willingness to show its subjects’ warts in extreme close-up and ultimate promise for a better tomorrow, this is easily the best season of the reality show, which first aired in 2001, and will easily be the best reality show of the year.

Gone are original producers and sometimes on-camera superstars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. In their place are new producers and mentors Kumail Nanjiani, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Issa Rae (who even makes a joke about Damon and Affleck “rolling in their graves”). Their goal is simple on paper, and borderline Sisyphean in execution: Give a first-time feature filmmaker a low-budget genre film to make, and document the entire process from pre-production to premiere.

Max announces programming coming to the platform this July, including the debut of the Max Original limited series Full Circle (7/13), from director Steven Soderbergh and writer Ed Solomon, which tells the story of an investigation into a botched kidnapping that uncovers long-held secrets connecting multiple characters and cultures in present day New York City. Best known for putting together The Other Side of the Wind, Filip Jan Rymsza blasted off on the Lido again with his third feature film, Mosquito State. He moved into production on his fourth feature film titled Object Permanence this October in Poland with Millie Brady, Alastair Mackenzie, Jessica Frances Dukes and Debi Mazar for a project about wanting more or …. wanting less. Scottish actor Alastair Mackenzie, recently spotted in “The Crown” and “Andor,” Jessica Frances Dukes and Debi Mazar have been added to the cast of Filip Jan Rymsza’s feature film “Object Permanence.”

They join previously announced star Millie Brady, who plays Brooke Brooks: a former supermodel who becomes a successful lifestyle mogul and is the first person to IPO herself.

Production is currently underway in Poland and will continue in Thailand and Germany. “Apples” DoP Bartosz Świniarski is lensing the film.

Set in the near future, “Object Permanence” is produced by Friends with Benefits Studio, with co-financing by the Polish Film Institute. Marta Lewandowska and Rymsza – the latter also behind “Mosquito State” – are producing, while CAA is handling North American sales.

It's hard to believe it, but Ozark has wrapped its run.

After four seasons of a pressure cooker-like environment, the Netflix juggernaut wrapped its run late last month.

Naturally, there are questions about whether the franchise could continue with a spinoff.

“It’s definitely something that people have talked about a bunch,” showrunner Chris Munday shared in an interview with TV Line.

“There’s nothing definitive. We’re lucky that people seem to really like the show so there’s obviously going to be some interest there.”

The shocking finale said goodbye to fan-favorite Ruth (Julia Garner), who was killed off.

Given the interest in that character, there had been rumblings pre-finale that Garner could reprise the role in a new series.

“There are still ways to stay inside the show and revisit things,” Mundy said.

“I’m sure people probably would’ve been happier if Ruth was out there.

With 34 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced on Monday morning. Among the most surprising 2022 Tony Awards nominations snubs was Katrina Lenk, who plays Bobbie in Marianne Elliott’s reimagining of the late Stephen Sondheim’s “Company.” The production merited nine nominations, including Best Musical Revival, Best Director, Best Featured Actor (Matt Doyle), and Best Featured Actress. Lenk previously won a Tony Award for her performance in Best Musical-winner “The Band’s Visit.”

Original musical “Flying Over Sunset” also underperformed. Even though the shuttered production scored four nominations, including Best Actress (Carmen Cusack) and Best Score, it missed out on the top category of Best Musical and Best Book for librettist James Lapine.

Forty-six years after the original production of Ntozake Shange’s legendary choreopoem “for colored girls who have considered suicide/ when the rainbow is enuf,” a sterling revival has returned to Broadway in the very same house where the original ran for nearly two years.
