Recently, I had the esteemed opportunity to chat with writer-director Matt Orlando, who has successfully shepherded his first feature film to the big screen. That would be A Resurrection, which follows a troubled teen, his psychologist, and the tangled web his school becomes embroiled in. The suspense-horror film stars Mischa Barton, J. Michael Trautmann, Devon Sawa, and was Michael Clarke Duncan’s final film. You can find our review for the film here, and can find it on VOD and in limited theatrical release now.

Considering he started off his career in the genre world, it's certainly fitting that now Jamie Kennedy is producing horror movies, including Matt Orlando's A Resurrection, which arrived in limited theaters this weekend.
Written and directed by first-time filmmaker Orlando, A Resurrection stars Mischa Barton, Devon Sawa, J. Michael Trautmann and Michael Clarke Duncan in his final role and follows a mentally ill student named Eli (Trautmann), who believes his recently deceased brother is returning from the grave for revenge on the students who killed him. The project was produced by Jamie Kennedy Entertainment and Levine Pictures.
Dread Central chatted with Kennedy earlier this week for Indie Horror Month to talk about his first indie horror production, A Resurrection, and what the future holds for Jamie Kennedy Entertainment as they continue to produce independent horror films. Since we had him on the phone, we couldn't help but get nostalgic...

A Resurrection began its limited theatrical release today and we recently had a chance to talk with writer/director Matt Orlando. Continue reading to learn about his experience as a first-time director and what projects he’s working on next:
Why was A Resurrection the project you wanted to move forward as both a writer and director?
Matt Orlando: I don’t know exactly where the idea came from. I always have a lot of ideas swimming around my head. I write a lot, and this story took hold and evolved into what it became. I liked the different themes and it really struck a chord with me.
With this being your first feature film as a director, was it difficult to get backing for this project?
Matt Orlando: I got way more than I wanted. When I wrote it, I never thought I’d get the cast and budget that I did.

Want to know what some of Jamie Kennedy’s favorite horror films are? What about his experience as a producer on the set of A Resurrection? We talk Scream, the cast of A Resurrection, and more in this exclusive interview.
How did you get involved with this project? Why this film?
Jamie Kennedy: Well, I was in the Scream movies, and I wanted to cultivate all of my horror fans. One of the producers approached me about this movie and I read Matt Orlando’s script. I found out that he wanted to direct it too, so that got me super excited, and that’s how I got involved.
Do you enjoy working in the horror genre?
Jamie Kennedy: Most definitely. Horror fans are the best and they are the most loyal. When they really love something, they can give it legs, and when they hate something you feel that.

As he slowly feeds Jessie clues into his brother’s mysterious death, she has the sheriff’s deputy (Devon Sawa) verify the less than believable and vague information. It’s time to shed a light on A Resurrection, a suspense horror thriller from first-time writer/director Matt Orlando, coming to theaters and VOD on March 22nd. The film, from Jamie Kennedy Entertainment, stars Mischa Barton (The O.C.), Devon Sawa (Final Destination, Slackers, Idle Hands), Jonathan Michael Trautman, and (pour a sip…) Michael Clarke Duncan in his last film.
The synopsis is simple: “A down to earth school psychologist tries to help a mentally ill student who actually believes his brother is coming back from the grave for revenge on the students who killed him.”
The film introduces a new player in the horror genre, has a good cast playing against type, and plays with audience expectations from the get go. A review and an interview with the director are forthcoming, but, in the meantime, check out the trailer for A Resurrection.

Jessie (Mischa Barton), a school psychologist tries to help Eli (Jonathan Michael Trautmann) who believes his dead brother is coming back from the grave to avenge his death. Naturally, bedlam ensues.
Devon Sawa has continued to work in genre fare, somewhat regularly, since his breakout roles in Idle Hands and Final Destination. He was a familiar and welcome face in A Resurrection. Sawa turned in a good performance, as Travis. And Mischa Barton successfully broke the mold of the roles we’ve seen her play time and again. The late Michael Clark Duncan was excellent as the high school principal. The entire cast actually turned in above average and authentic performances. I was surprised that first time director Matt Orlando was able to round up such great talent for his directorial debut. The cast helped turn what could have been a run of the mill, low budget horror film in to something more than that.

Hey, who doesn’t want a brother that refuses to stay dead? Teenage weirdo Eli in Matt Orlando’s “A Resurrection” has one of those — and he’s coming back for a little payback. This apparently involves trapping a bunch of kids in the school and taking them out. Unless, of course, Mischa Barton (of “The Oc” fame) and her boyfriend Devon Sawa (of “Nikita”) can stop him. Yeah, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say No. Check out a trailer and some images from the movie below. “A Resurrection” is also notable for being one of the last films co-starring the late Michael Clarke Duncan, by the by. We return with the latest edition of the Indie Spotlight, highlighting recent independent horror news sent our way. Today’s feature includes release details for A Resurrection, the first teaser trailer for Ten, a review of Smiley, and much more:
First Teaser Trailer for Ten: “Ten is a collectivist, post-exploitation psychological thriller devised as a possible explanation for the events of the 1972 Spektor Island Massacre. On a cold December afternoon, ten women arrive at a mansion on Spektor Island, famed for years of reported hauntings and strange activities. Will they live through the night?
The all-female cast film is a response to exploitation, slasher, and thriller films, with particular focus on the kind of storytelling prominent in b-movies and genre films from the 1950s to the 1980s. It explores the meaning and fluidity of identity and takes a number of surprising turns, paying homage to filmmakers and producers such as Alfred Hitchcock,...

Directed by Matt Orlando, the movie is set during a single horrific day and night at a high school, a guidance counselor, the school principal, and a local police officer must save the lives of several trapped students before a paranormal entity kills them all.
Ressurection stars Mischa Barton as a guidance councelor, Michael Clark Duncan as Addison, the school principal, while Devon Sawa is on board as the police officer named Travis.
The rest of the cast also includes J. Michael Trautmann, Stuart Stone, Nick Jandl, Matt Willig, Alanna Romansky and Morgan Wolk.

There are times when being an only child really doesn't seem too bad. Especially when those little brothers and sisters we have spend their time generally annoying us by breaking our things, getting us in trouble, going on a murderous revenge-fueled rampage...
That seems to be the case with Matt Orlando's new film for Archstone Distribution, The Sibling. The flick, which is now in post-production and flying under the radar, stars Mischa Barton, Devon Sawa, and Michael Clarke Duncan. Though no official synopsis is available at press time, a glance at the trailer below reveals possible ghosts, exhumed graves, bullies, violence, slaughtered pigs, and the scariest looking angry dad we've ever seen!
Look for more on this one as we get it.
