Matt Johnson’s BlackBerry satirical comedy earned the best movie honor at the Canadian Screen Awards on Friday, which also tapped the Canadian Indigenous TV series Little Bird as the best TV drama.

In earlier prize-giving this week, BlackBerry picked up hardware for best adapted screenplay, cinematography and a best supporting comedy performance trophy for Glenn Howerton. The fact-based feature that bowed in Berlin also awarded Johnson the best director honor, and Jay Baruchel the best comedy performance trophy.

Little Bird, which came into the Canadian film and TV awards with a field-leading 19 nominations, saw Darla Contois pick up the best TV drama performance prize after the series earlier earned trophies for best drama ensemble, best casting and best supporting drama performer for Braeden Clarke.

SkyMed will keep flying high. Paramount+ and CBC have renewed the medical rescue drama for a third season. The drama follows the young medics and pilots who fly air ambulances in Northern Canada.

Natasha Calis, Morgan Holmstrom, Praneet Akilla, Ace “Aason” Nadjiwan, Mercedes Morris, Thomas Elms, Kheon Clarke, Rebecca Kwan, Aaron Ashmore, and Braeden Clarke star in the Paramount+ series, and they will all be returning for season three. Paramount+’s medical drama SkyMed has been renewed for season three, with production expected to begin on March 25, 2024 in Manitoba and Ontario. Anthony Grant (Star Trek: Discovery) and Nicola Correia-Damude (Shadowhunters) join the season three cast in recurring roles.

Season three stars returning series regulars Natasha Calis (Nurses) as Hayley, Morgan Holmstrom (Outlander) as Crystal, Praneet Akilla (Nancy Drew) as Chopper, Mercedes Morris (Ghosts) as Lexi, Thomas Elms (The Boys In The Boat) as Nowak, Kheon Clarke (Riverdale) as Tristan, and Sydney Kuhne (Ginny & Georgia) as Stef.

North of North is coming soon to Netflix. The streaming service has announced the cast for the new comedy series (formerly known as "Untitled Arctic Comedy") which has started production in Nunavut in Canada.

Mary Lynn Rajskub, Maika Harper, Braeden Clarke, Jay Ryan, Kelly William, Zorga Qaunaq, Doreen Simmonds, and Tanya Tagaq are joining the previously cast Anna Lambe and Keira Cooper.

Mary Lynn Rajskub and Jay Ryan have boarded the Netflix, CBC and Aptn comedy North of North, which has started production in Nunavut in northern Canada.

Rajskub played Chloe O’Brian on the long-running 24 drama and also starred in the comedy Night School with Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish and Mayfield Games with Mira Sorvino. Ryan is a veteran of New Zealand soaps and series like Mary Kills People and Beauty and the Beast.

Other new cast members for North of North include Maika Harper, Braeden Clarke, Kelly William, Zorga Qaunaq, Doreen Simmonds and Tanya Tagaq. They join the previously-announced lead Anna Lambe, who plays young Inuk mother Siaja, with Keira Cooper, a 7 year-old actress from Iqaluit, Nunavut, playing her daughter Bun.

Siaja wants to build a new future for herself, not easily done in her small Arctic town where everyone knows your business, according to a synopsis for North of North from the producers.

Netflix’s upcoming arctic comedy finally has a name and has rounded out cast, as it goes into production in snowy Nunavut, Canada.

Stacey Aglok MacDonald and Alethea Arnaquq-Baril’s North of North began production today. The comedy follows a young Inuk mother (Anna Lambe) who wants to build a new future for herself, but finds it won’t be easy in her small Arctic town where everyone knows her business.

Joining Anna Lambe and Keira Cooper in the cast are Mary Lynn Rajskub, Maika Harper, Braeden Clarke, Jay Ryan, Kelly William, Zorga Qaunaq and Doreen Simmonds (True Detective: Night Country).

The Canadian indigenous TV drama Little Bird has grabbed a field-leading 19 nominations heading into the Canadian Screen Awards.

The series, which airs on Crave in Canada and PBS stateside, follows Behzig Little Bird, who was stripped of her indigenous identity when adopted into a Jewish family at age 5. As an adult, she goes looking for her indigenous roots and discovers she was forcibly taken from her birth family on the Long Pine Reserve in Saskatchewan by the Canadian government as part of a controversial Sixties Scoop policy.

Little Bird will compete for best drama series. and Darla Contois and Ellyn Jade nabbed nominations for best lead performer in a drama. Little Bird also earned Imajyn Cardinal a nomination for best guest drama performance, and Braeden Clarke grabbed a mention for best supporting drama performance.

Paramount+ has unveiled the official season two trailer for the medical drama SkyMed. The trailer’s release was accompanied by news that season two will premiere on Thursday, January 11, 2024, with all nine episodes available for bingeing.

Prime Video dropped a teaser for Season 5 of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” which will premiere April 14.

Season 5 finds Midge Maisel as close to the success she’s been working towards while still a long way off. Previously, she had burnt bridges and been cut from tour, with the season ending on the star in front of Carnegie Hall, reinvigorated to chase her dreams.

The fifth season’s cast includes Rachel Brosnahan, Tony Shalhoub, Alex Borstein, Marin Hinkle, Michael Zegen, Kevin Pollak, Caroline Aaron, Reid Scott, Alfie Fuller and Jason Ralph. The show was created by Amy Sherman-Palladino with executive producer Daniel Palladino. The two wrote and directed the series as well.

Filming is now underway on season two of Paramount+ SkyMed. Paramount+, CBC, and Piazza Entertainment announced season two of the medical drama is currently shooting in Ontario and Manitoba. However, the announcement didn’t include a targeted premiere date.

Season one consisted of nine episodes and debuted on July 10, 2022. Season two will also have a nine-episode run.

Natasha Calis, Aason Nadjiwon, Morgan Holmstrom, Praneet Akilla, Thomas Elms, Mercedes Morris, and Kheon Clarke return as series regulars. The SkyMed ensemble is adding Sydney Kuhne (Ginny & Georgia), Ryan Ali (Aquaslash), and Nadine Whiteman-Roden (Faith Heist) for season two.

Indigenous Love Story Stellar Underway

Exclusive: Principal photogprahy is underway on Stellar, Darlene Naponse’s love story starring Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers and Braeden Clarke. The news coincides with National Indigenous Peoples Day. Based on the short story of the same name written by Naponse, the film follows two Indigenous characters in a chance encounter that sets off a cosmic and environmental connection that seeks to restore the past, while bringing hope to the future. Naponse is an Anishinaabe from Atikameksheng Anishnawbek – a First Nations people from northern Ontario, Canada – and is the founder of Baswewe Films.
