Part of the reason Prime Video's "The Boys" has been acclaimed is the ways it has adapted its source material, a satirical superhero gore-fest by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. The comic has its moments of pathos, but it's mostly just a vile splatterfest. There's so much bad taste abound in the 72 issues that it often makes you wish your brain could spit it out.

"The Boys" TV series (developed by Eric Kripke) keeps the violence and dark humor, but it sharpens the comic's genre critique while updating it for modern politics. The superheroes of "The Boys" are still stand-ins for the rot of corporate America and celebrity culture. However, the TV show explores its characters with more sincerity (take the musical scene in episode 5). Kripke's "The Boys" doesn't laugh at its characters (at least not the leads) in the same way that Ennis' does.

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences on Tuesday morning announced the nominations for the inaugural Children’s & Family Emmy Awards, which will be presented on Saturday, Dec. 10 (Creative Arts) and Sunday, Dec. 11 at the Wilshire Ebell Theater in Los Angeles.

Disney+’s The Mysterious Benedict Society and the movie Sneakerella lead the pack with 11 nominations each, followed by HBO Max’s Sesame Street (with 10) and Netflix’s Heartstopper and Sweet Tooth (which netted nine apiece).

Netflix is developing a sequel to Robert Rodriguez’s newly released superhero pic “We Can Be Heroes.”

The movie, which draws from the young heroes in the director’s “Spy Kids” franchise and “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl,” follows the children of Earth’s superheroes, whose parents have been kidnapped by alien invaders. The children are left with no choice but to work together to save their parents and the world.

Rodriguez, a veteran of superhero movies starring children, recently directed “Alita: Battle Angel,” as well as “Sin City” and its follow-up, “Sin City: A Dame to Kill for.” Along with Rodriguez, “We Can Be Heroes” was produced by Racer Max and executive produced by Ben Ormand. December has been a crazy month for Pedro Pascal, as the actor has had three major projects in the spotlight recently, each of which has become the hottest title on their respective platform. We Can Be Heroes is yet another Netflix film project for which the streaming giant has tapped a high-profile name, in this case that of action auteur Robert Rodriguez. However, this particular offering will see Rodriguez tap into his more family-friendly side, utilizing a cast of kids; a side that yielded him 2000s-era success with the Spy Kids film franchise.

As we inch closer to upfronts week, the broadcast networks are cleaning house to make room for some new series. 

As such, ABC has now swung the ax on freshman comedy The Kids Are Alright, and freshman drama The Fix. 

Of the two cancellations, The Kids Are Alright is the biggest surprise. The Mary McCormack and Michael Cudlitz-fronted series had strong reviews. 

It started strong in the ratings, but has tailed off in recent weeks. It is currently averaging 4.1 million total viewers and a 0.9 rating in the demo in live + same day measures.

The news on “The Kids Are Alright” was announced by series creator Tim Doyle on Twitter. “‘The Kids Are Alright’ is dead. I just got the call. Goodbye,” he wrote.

The ensemble comedy, set in the 1970s, centers on a traditional Irish-Catholic family, the Clearys. Mom Peggy (Mary McCormack) and dad Mike (Michael Cudlitz) are raising eight boisterous boys, who spend their days with little supervision, against the backdrop of one of America’s most turbulent decades.

The series also starred Sam Straley as Lawrence Cleary, Caleb Foote as Eddie Cleary, Sawyer Barth as Frank Cleary, Christopher Paul Richards as Joey Cleary, Jack Gore as Timmy Cleary, Andy Walken as William Cleary and Santino Barnard as Pat Cleary.

Penned and executive produced by the former Last Man Standing showrunner, the first season of the 1970s-set ensemble comedy premiered October 16 last year and is scheduled to wrap up on May 21 in what will now be a series finale.

Following a very traditional Irish-Catholic family in suburban L.A. amidst the hangover from the 1960s, parents Mike (Michael Cudlitz) and Peggy (Mary McCormack) are overwhelmed raising eight boys and are hit by a figurative truck when oldest son Lawrence (Sam Straley) returns home to declare he’s quitting the seminary to “save the world.”

ABC has given back orders to Tuesday comedy series The Kids Are Alright and Splitting Up Together. With that, the network has picked up additional episodes of all of its fall series that did not have full-season orders.

ABC would not specify the size of the pickups for freshman Kids Are Alright and sophomore Splitting Up Together beyond calling them full-season orders. I hear Kids Are Alright has received a Back 9 order for a traditional 22-episode full season, while Splitting Up Together will produced five additional episodes for a 18-episode second season.

Kids Are Alright, from ABC Studios, has been the stronger ratings performer of the two, as the 1970s blue-collar family comedy, airing at 8:30 Pm, is benefiting from a stronger lead-in from The Conners. ABC has picked up “Splitting Up Together” and “The Kids Are Alright” for full seasons.

Freshman series “The Kids Are Alright” premiered in October in the post-“The Conners” timeslot. From creator and executive producer Tim Doyle, the series is inspired by Doyle’s own childhood. The show stars Michael Cudlitz as Mike Cleary, Mary McCormack as Peggy Cleary, Sam Straley as Lawrence Cleary, Caleb Foote as Eddie Cleary, Sawyer Barth as Frank Cleary, Christopher Paul Richards as Joey Cleary, Jack Gore as Timmy Cleary, Andy Walken as William Cleary, and Santino Barnard as Pat Cleary. Here’s some alright news: ABC’s Tuesday comedy block isn’t splitting up anytime soon. The Alphabet Network has given full-season orders to freshman sitcom The Kids Are Alright, as well as sophomore series Splitting Up Together, TVLine has learned. We hear that nine additional episodes of Kids have been ordered, along with five more episodes of Splitting.

Inspired by executive producer Tim Doyle’s childhood, The Kids Are Alright follows a large Irish Catholic family navigating the trials and tribulations of life in 1970s Los Angeles. The show stars Michael Cudlitz (The Walking Dead) and Mary McCormack (In Plain Sight...

If songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul win the original music and lyrics Emmy for their song in “A Christmas Story Live!”, they will attain the elusive Egot status: that is, winning the four biggest honors in show business.

The two collaborators are nominated for “In the Market for a Miracle,” one of three new tunes they wrote for Fox’s Dec. 17 adaptation of their 2012 stage musical based on the holiday movie classic.

They previously won the 2016 song Oscar for “La La Land,” the 2017 Tony for their score for Broadway’s “Dear Evan Hansen” and the 2018 Grammy for the cast album for “Evan Hansen.”

Only 12 people in history have managed the Egot feat, and just five of those were composers. Plus, Pasek and Paul would be the youngest to manage the feat; both aged 33. Are they thinking about the possibility of entering this exclusive club?

“We’re really excited by what it means for the field of musical theater,” reveals Benj Pasek about the possibility of completing his Egot for “A Christmas Story Live!” Pasek and his songwriting partner Justin Paul “have been fans of this art form since we were little kids,” and he believes the awards recognition “is an indication that multiple mediums are embracing storytelling through music.”

The duo snagged their career-first Emmy nomination this year: Best Music and Lyrics for penning the original song “In the Market for a Miracle” for this live TV adaptation of their Broadway hit. ABC ordered a mix of comedy pilots this season — most revolved around families but some ventured into workplace and even the superhero genre. In the end, the ones that made the cut to series are the 1970s-set The Kids Are Alright (fka untitled Tim Doyle), which just got the nod, and Single Parents, which was picked up earlier today. Both are family comedies, as are all renewed ABC half-hour series.

ABC last year tried to broaden up its comedy field with The Mayor, its most profile new comedy series and the only one to get a fall launch. It fizzled as did another comedy that had a strong workplace component, Alex Inc. Meanwhile, the revival of ABC’s classic family comedy Roseanne had a blockbuster premiere. The family-themed new comedy Splitting Up Together, which launched behind Roseanne, was the only freshman ABC comedy to make it to Season 2.

Fox has released the first teaser trailer for their upcoming live musical event A Christmas Story Live! These live TV musicals are the big craze right now! The networks seem to be seeing a lot of success from them, which is why they keep producing them!

Now Fox is taking my favorite Christmas movie of all time and capitalizing on the popularity of it with this live musical event. I know it won't be as good as the original film, but I hope that it at least turns out to be a decent and entertaining program.

The “30 Rock” alum joins the live TV musical as Ralphie’s teacher, Miss Shields, while the “Silicon Valley” vet will play the kid’s dad. The two join previously announced cast members Maya Rudolph, Matthew Broderick and Andy Walken.

Rudolph is Ralphie’s mom, Broderick plays the narrator — adult Ralphie — and Walken will be the 9-year-old holding out hope for a Red Ryder BB gun.

Walken — who already has a handful of TV acting credits under his belt, including NCIS and Heartbeat — won the role after a nationwide search that resulted in 350 auditions.
