Spike Lee is not one to let sleeping dogs lie. Not only is the outspoken writer and director ready to remake classic films, but he’s also willing to revisit his own work. And in updating his old work for modern audiences — quite well, it turns out — he’s eager to re-air old grievances.
Specifically, he wants people to know that Denzel Washington should’ve won the Oscar for his performance in Lee’s 1992 film, “Malcolm X.” And he’s using “She’s Gotta Have It” to get the word out.
In the opening episode of Lee’s new Netflix original series, Nola Darling (DeWanda Wise) brings her friend and lover Mars Blackmon (Anthony Ramos) into her apartment. Leaning against one wall is a floor-to-ceiling canvas painting of Denzel Washington as Malcolm X.

In 2017, “She’s Gotta Have It” may have more to say about men than women. Though primarily focused on the same independent woman from Spike Lee’s 1986 feature film — the sexually liberated Nola Darling, played here by DeWanda Wise — the series, directed in its entirety by Lee, often feels more focused on correcting men’s behavior than celebrating the singular human being at its core.
That’s not a damning issue, only a nagging one. Many, if not all, of the messages within Lee’s 10 episodes are valuable, insightful, and rarely so thoroughly discussed via a serialized narrative — not to mention told from a proudly black perspective. While the overriding educational value can lead to an academic disconnection at times, Lee’s revisitation is as singular and powerful today as it was 30 years ago.

Will & Grace came back to life and didn't miss a beat, especially with topical jokes. Within just days of current events making headlines, like the allegations of sexual harassment, assault leveled at Harvey Weinstein, the NBC comedy included jokes in reference to them. How is Will & Grace doing this? It's not predicting news with a crystal ball. In the Thursday, Oct. 19 episode, "Grandpa Jack," Megan Mullally's Karen chucked a paper towel roll at Tony, played by Anthony Ramos, after harassing him. "Heads up, Puerto Rico! Have a good time," Karen said and threw a roll of paper towels at him, just like Donald Trump did in Puerto Rico. An embarrassed Grace (Debra Messing) said,...

Sitting down to interview Bridget Everett and Danielle Macdonald, it would have been too easy to forget to turn on the recorder. Everett, an icon on the New York City alt-cabaret scene and protégée of sorts to Amy Schumer, arrives first and asks if it would be Ok to let Poppy, her Pomeranian and an Instagram star in her own right, out of her carrier during our time. (Everett's necklace says "Poppy" in gold cursive.) We're deep into sharing our rescue dogs' obsessive-compulsive behaviors when Macdonald, an Aussie actress who's had bit roles on American Horror Story and Glee, sidles up.
The 26-year-old is still wearing her high heels after many hours of press junketing at Hotel Polomar in West Hollywood, which Everett commends her for. (She'd already swapped her own for a pair of pink flip-flops.) Talk of heels turns to talk of drag and, before long, Macdonald and I realize we both played in the same...

It’s a big, big day for Anthony Ramos.
The up-and-coming star, who wowed in the dual roles of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton in Broadway hit Hamilton, has today climbed aboard both Godzilla: King of the Monsters and A Star is Born, Bradley Cooper’s music drama headed up by a true star and all-around industry icon in Lady Gaga (Stefani Germanotta). It’s a remake of William Wellman’s 1937 film of the same name, and we understand Eric Roth is the brains behind the screenplay. As for Ramos, he’s landed the part of Gaga’s best friend Ramon, an “aspiring dancer who is born to be in the spotlight.” Filming is underway now ahead of a theatrical release on September 28th of this year.
That’s the indie passion project; as for the blockbuster, Deadline’s scoop reveals that Ramos has boarded King of the Monsters to play Cpl.
