- At the time of his murder, Wild Bill Hickok had been living in Deadwood for the past year or more.
- Showed natural ability with a firearm from a young age.
- Was reputed to be a deadly shot, particularly when armed with his 1851 Colt revolvers.
- During the last few years of Hickok's life, his physical health declined. His eyesight became impaired and he had to use a walking stick for mobility.
- Amongst the actors that have played Hickok, are the following: Jeff Bridges, Gary Cooper, Keith Carradine and Guy Madison.
- From late 1873 until early 1874, Hickok worked as an actor in Buffalo Bill's theatre show. The experience wasn't a happy one. Hickok felt ridiculous in his costumes, with the blinding theatre lights and the dreadful dialogue adding to his annoyance.
- Initially, Hickok came to Deadwood with the intention of prospecting for gold. Nearby in the Black Hills, there was reputed to be an abundance of gold.
- Upon that fateful day in 1876, Hickok played cards with his back to the front entrance. Usually, he would have sat facing the wall. No other card player was willing to swap seats.
- Was involved in one of the few cases of a one-on-one showdown. It happened in 1865, when Hickok shot and killed Davis Tutt.
- Accidentally shot and killed his own deputy, during his term as marshal in Abilene, 1871.
- His killer Jack McCall was immediately arrested. He was found guilty of murder and sentenced to be executed, in 1877.
- Over the years, it's been exaggerated how many people Hickok killed. Previous information claimed the number to be over 100. More recent data, suggests it was closer to under 20.
- Was a staunch supporter in the rights of black people, during the time of slavery.
- Was known to take pride in his personal appearance, which included bathing regularly and being well-dressed.
- Briefly knew George Armstrong Custer during the late 1860s, when Hickok worked as a scout.
