“Blair Witch,” the sequel to the 1999 thriller “The Blair Witch Project,” is now out in theaters. For those who enjoyed the horror film that tricked everyone into thinking it was a true story, it’s a great blast from the past. But for others like Heather Donahue, star of the original film, news of the sequel initially brought back some bad memories.
Donahue wrote a piece for The Guardian where she described how the marketing department for the first film faked her death to sell the movie and the emotions that followed as the picture got bigger and she was left in the dark.
“My obituary was published when I was 24. It’s a complicated thing to be dead when you’re still very much alive and eager to make a name for yourself,” she wrote. “ I was the girl. The girl from ‘The Blair Witch Project.’”

Ava DuVernay is beloved for her intimate independent films (“I Will Follow,” “Middle of Nowhere”) and prestige dramas (“Selma”), but she’s about to head into blockbuster territory for Disney’s “A Wrinkle Of Time,” based on the beloved science fantasy novel by Madeleine L’Engle. The film will make DuVernay the first person of color to direct a $100 million feature, and it seems like she’s already having the time of her life in pre-production.

20th Century Fox has picked up the right to an upcoming novel called The Hunger. The film adaptation will be written and directed by Luke Scott, who is Ridley Scott’s son. He recently helmed the upcoming sci-fi thriller Morgan, which looks solid.
All we really know about the story for The Hunger at this point is that it will tell the tragic and bizarre tale of the Donner Party, which will be infused with a “Walking Dead-style twist. What is that twist? The report doesn’t say, but it’s safe to assume that zombies will be involved.
In case you’re not familiar with the Donner Party, it was a group of pioneers on their way to California who were trapped for several months in the Sierra Nevada in late 1846 and early 1847 due to a snow storm. To survive, many of them resorted to cannibalism. Only 48 of...

He may not be in "Chains," but some sturdy reinforcements can't hurt when Nick Jonas faces nature head-on in the new season of Running Wild with Bear Grylls.
People can exclusively reveal that Jonas, 23, will guest-star on the premiere this August when the star-studded outdoor adventure series returns with a spectacular, two-part season 3 opener.
The singer can be seen huddling in the snow of the Sierra Nevada Mountains as he and Grylls trek through icy cliffs and avalanche-prone mountains. And we're only a little "Jealous" of Grylls for getting to behold a shirtless Jonas as they splash through freezing waters.

Greg and Vanessa Blasic are no ordinary father-daughter duo. After climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's tallest peak, in 2005, the pair from Rancho Santa Fe, California, made a pact to scale the highest mountains on each continent, a feat fewer than 400 people have accomplished. And after 12 years of intense training and climbing, Greg, 56, and Vanessa, 27, finally accomplished their goal when they conquered Mount Everest last month. "We help each other. I could help her when she had small problems with her stomach or nausea and she helped me with climbing skills because hers are better than mine," Greg told the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Johnny Cash, the Man in Black, is being honored with a big hairy spider. A new species of black tarantula was founded in the Sierra Nevada foothills, near Folsom Prison, where Cash recorded one of his most famous albums. Aphonopelma johnnycashi was one of 14 new tarantula species discovered in the area, spider-studying scientist Chris Hamilton told the BBC. "It's a perfect name," he explains. "It fits the spider - it's found around Folsom and the males are predominantly all black, so it fits his image. I have a Johnny Cash tattoo so I was very happy that it worked out that way." As Cash himself said, "And I heard, as it were, the noise of thunder. One of the four beasts saying, Come and see, and I saw, and behold a black spider."...

America Lost and Found is a three film retrospective on Mubi of Peter Bo Rappmund's work. Psychohydrography (2010) starts playing on January 12, 2016, with Tectonics (2012) starting January 17 in the Us and 19th elsewhere, and Vulgar Fractions (2012) on January 26.PsychohydrographyAlong with an array of field recordings and non-diegetic aural effects, filmmaker Peter Bo Rappmund delicately integrates the sound of a skipping turntable needle at key junctures of his first feature, Psychohydrography (2010). Inspired by William Basinski’s The Disintegration Loops—a 4-disc collection of tape loops from the early-80s which slowly deteriorated in real-time as the experimental composer attempted to transfer the recordings from analog to digital storage space in September 2001—the film’s unique sonic accompaniment functions in these moments as both quasi-score and thematic augmentation to what can generally be described as an observational landscape film. The correlations between Basinski’s opus, now synonymous with the tragedy of 9/11, and Rappmund...

Clean-cut Disney actor who co-starred with cats, dogs, chimps and Herbie the Love Bug
Mickey Mouse apart, the figure who most represented Walt Disney Productions in the 1960s was the clean-cut actor Dean Jones. Jones, who has died aged 84, starred as the bumbling, somewhat bland, hero in five entertaining kiddie movies with animals in the title: That Darn Cat! (1965), The Ugly Dachshund (1966), Monkeys, Go Home! (1966), The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit (1968) and The Love Bug (1968). The last of these starred not strictly speaking an animal, nor an insect, but a white Volkswagen Beetle with a mind of its own, ostensibly owned by the unsuccessful racing car driver Jim Douglas, played by Jones.
Happily, Herbie – as the cuddly, anthropomorphic auto is christened – helps Jim win an all-important race through the Sierra Nevada mountains against his nemesis, the villainous Thorndyke (David Tomlinson) in his sleek Italian Thorndyke Special. Jones, who did...

A furious slew of titles in the works would seem to prophesize a robust main competition slate for Cannes 2016. Though our initial list will eventually be pruned down as the year progresses (Berlin may snag something in here, especially if their 2016 lineup looks anything like their landmark selection from this past January), we’re confident that we will be seeing another round of heavy hitting auteurs unveiling their latest bits on the Croisette.
Absent from the main competition in 2015 were the Romanians (Muntean and Porumboiu were assigned to Un Certain Regard) and any trace of Latin filmmakers. The 2016 edition looks to make up for lost ground. For the Romanians, a couple heavy hitting titans from the New Wave will be ready. Cristi Puiu, who previously won Ucr in 2005 with The Death of Mr. Lazarescu should hopefully be getting a competition invite for Sierra Nevada. Meanwhile, previous Palme d’Or winner...

Sundance. Berlin. Tribeca. Cannes. Venice. Toronto. New York. Once saved for occasional weeks out of any given year, “film festival season” has now become a year-long event. Be it the aforementioned biggest of the big, or the ever growing slate of must-attend smaller festivals like Hot Docs, True/False, Stanley or Telluride, film festivals are cropping up across the globe.
But very few of them are set against a beautiful landscape quite as glorious as the Mammoth Lakes region of California.
Marking their debut this year, the Mammoth Lakes Film Festival will launch their inaugural lineup this week, with a hotly discussed documentary from Alex Gibney leading the way.
Gibney’s Steve Jobs: The Man In The Machine will open the festival this Wednesday. “We are blessed to have gotten such a strong lineup this year,” says Shira Dubrovner, founder of the festival. She, along with veteran programmer Paul Sbrizzi...

The first annual Mammoth Lakes Film Festival will make it’s debut this week. Set in the scenic and majestic setting of Mammoth Lakes, California, and will take place May 27-31, and will open with acclaimed Academy Award winning filmmaker Alex Gibney’s new documentary Steve Jobs: The Man In The Machine.
The festival will present sixteen films in Narrative and Documentary Competition. I recently spoke with Artistic Director/Director Shira Dubrovner about choosing the films for the festival. She said:
“[The films] have a common thread. The one thing I did with this festival is give the full power to Paul Sbrizzi, who is a veteran at programming. He’s been programming for Slamdance for the past fifteen years, he programs for La film fest and many other film festivals in the country. I knew his artistic taste, and I know that he also has an eye for talent. He...

It’s rarely mentioned today, but Walt Disney, alongside innovating the animated feature film, was also among the pioneers of the feature-length nature documentary. 1953’s Oscar-winning The Living Desert is still one of the pinnacles of the genre — with its beautiful photography and sly editing, not to mention its gently anthropomorphized, playful depiction of animal life in the Arizona Desert. But perhaps its most remarkable quality is its easy translation of geography and science: The Living Desert opens with an elegantly animated sequence explaining how the Sierra Nevada Mountains keep moisture from reaching the desert, and there’s a comforting simplicity to it, as if Uncle Walt and his filmmakers had succeeded in turning science into fairy tale. That’s not meant as a slight: Generations of kids back then probably first learned about the wonders of nature from these films unspooling through 16mm projectors in classrooms around the country.

Alberto Arvelo’s Simón Bolívar epic The Liberator – Libertador starring Edgar Ramírez will represent Venezuela as the foreign language Oscar submission.
Spanish actress María Valverde, Danny Huston, Imanol Arias and Gary Lewis also star in the story of Bolivar’s fight to free South America from Spanish rule and his role in establishing the Hispanic-American republic of Gran Colombia.
Mundial handles international sales on The Liberator – Libertador and Cohen Media Group holds North American rights and will release theatrically on October 3.
The film generated close to 600,000 admissions when it opened in Venezuela on July 24. The Venezuelan committee chose the film for its “artistic and production value, staging/realisation, music and photography.”
Timothy Sexton wrote the screenplay and Ana Loehnert, Winfried Hammacher and Arvelo produced. Ramírez served as executive producer with Maria A Guerrero Rocca.

Thanks to a somewhat suspect series of sub-genres born out of horror cinema’s tendency to descend into an exploitative pit of B-Movie mediocrity, to many the genre at large has lost its bite over recent decades. Horror fans stand shaking atop a perilous precipice, debating whether to plummet into one of James Wan’s undeniably entertaining demon infested households – littered with creepy kids and their even creepier fondness for jump-scare inducing toy antiquities – or to skip dinner and experience a Smörgåsbord of torture porn delicacies. Thankfully studios aren’t as willing to give Eli Roth money these days and this ugly trend has been somewhat curbed – minus the upcoming The Green Inferno, which, in all fairness, looks rather tasty. Also, don’t forget the wealth of found footage which lay hidden in darkened attics and dank cellars, because in an age of Hi-def, Blu-ray movies and instant streaming services,...

In honor of Ravenous finally being released on Blu-Ray from those magnificent madmen at Scream Factory, I thought I’d conjure up some words about one of the great, underrated chillers of the 90’s. It’s a film I’ve deemed a personal favorite amongst mixed fans of film. I’ll recommend it without batting an eye. It’s essential viewing for horror fans, period. One of the key elements to understanding why I love Ravenous, you have to understand the background of my film going history that brought me to it.
For a great period in the 90’s, I saw many films in theaters with my uncle, and when I say many, I’d say it would be somewhere in the neighborhood of a metric ton.

I have seen Ravenous at least a couple dozen times. I’ve seen it on VHS, and I’ve seen it on DVD, and now, thanks to Scream Factory, I have seen it on Blu-ray, and I couldn’t be happier. I read a scathing review of the disc before I watched it, as I’m sure some of you did, but I’ve learned that bad reviews of Scream titles are to be taken with a grain of salt. Scream have become popular now, so with all of their millions of fans, will naturally come a handful of loudmouth detractors. I watched the disc from start to finish, including all of the extras, and I can say without issue that this release is definitely a worthy upgrade to one of my favorite weird little movies. I’ve been trying to save the new Scream releases for the night before the retail date,...

A Northern California couple out walking their dog on their property stumbled across a modern-day bonanza: $10 million in rare, mint-condition gold coins buried in the shadow of an old tree. Nearly all of the 1,427 coins, dating from 1847 to 1894, are in uncirculated, mint condition, said David Hall, co-founder of Professional Coin Grading Service of Santa Ana, which recently authenticated them. Although the face value of the gold pieces only adds up to more than $28,000, some of them are so rare that coin experts say they could fetch nearly $1 million apiece. "I don't like to say once-in-a-lifetime for anything, but you don't...
