It’s an interesting time to be a horror fan. From artsy genre mashups to the modern slasher renaissance, it appears that there’s a scary movie for nearly every kind of viewer these days. Personally, I think one of the most fascinating genre trends in recent years has to be the rise of horror flicks inspired by childhood stories that only just entered the public domain – a movement that was kick-started by Rhys Frake-Waterfield’s Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey in 2023.
While that first film was mostly panned by critics, with reviewers accusing it of being a disastrous cash-grab leeching off of a popular intellectual property, it was still successful enough to warrant a better-received follow-up. And with the sequel finally available at home this week, I think this is a great time to dive into how Frake-Waterfield and his team were able to turn a low-budget experiment...

Made on a budget of less than $100,000, director Rhys Frake-Waterfield’s movie Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (watch it Here) earned more than $6 million during its global release in early 2023… and sure, the movie racked up the Razzies, but it’s money that matters, and that’s why Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 was made and given a theatrical release earlier this year. We know the Australia-based company Umbrella Entertainment will be giving the film a special edition Blu-ray release next month, and now it has been announced (via Collider) that Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 will be receiving a VOD release in the United States on June 26th!
A.A. Milne’s 1926 children’s book Winnie-the-Pooh and the characters in it lapsed into the public domain at the start of last year, and that’s how Frake-Waterfield was able to make these movies happen, no permission required.

The original Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey was easily one of the worst films of last year, but based on its outrageous premise and low budget, it managed to turn a profit. That of course means a sequel, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2, with all the usual claims of a bigger budget, more kills and better effects. Conspicuously absent were promises of a decent script or acting, however.
Taking place a year after the original, Blood and Honey 2 opens with the introduction of Owl, who looks more like a vulture than anything. He joins Pooh and Piglet in their fun and games, starting with the torture and killing of three scantily clad campers.
Elsewhere, Christopher Robin, now played by Scott Chambers, aka producer Scott Jeffrey,...

We already knew that there’s going to be another installment in the Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey horror franchise, because it was announced earlier this month that Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey and Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 (which is now on the last day of its three-day theatrical run) a part of a cinematic universe with other horror movies inspired by children’s stories, like Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, Bambi: The Reckoning, and Pinocchio Unstrung, and it’s building up to the crossover movie Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble, which will be released in 2025. But now Variety has been able to confirm that, in addition to Poohniverse, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 3 is also moving ahead. This sequel will have a bigger budget than either of its predecessors, and “will introduce new characters from the original Winnie-the-Pooh stories, including Rabbit, the heffalumps and the woozles.

For more than 40 years now, moviegoers have lined up to see the spectacle of people being slaughtered by a psycho with a chainsaw, a psycho in a Halloween mask, a psycho in a goalie mask, a psycho with burnt skin and a striped shirt and fedora, or a psycho with S&m nails in his face. So why not a psycho Winnie the Pooh?
“Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey” raised a few hackles — otherwise known as free publicity — for having the scuzzy temerity to take a couple of beloved children’s characters and place them at the center of a slasher film. Yet the stunt concept was about all there was to it. The movie, made on a budget of $50,000, was too logy and inept to be a real scandal, or any sort of theatrical sleeper hit. On paper, “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey” sounded like an extreme TikTok video,...

‘Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey II’ Review – Sequel Defies Expectations and Surpasses the Original
Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey broke the internet when it was first announced back in 2022. Disney fans and everyone else were caught off guard by the concept of the iconic toy bear and his stuffed pals becoming feral, but enough time has passed to where this current genre practice — turning public-domain material into horror films — is less of a shock. However, that didn’t stop folks from reacting with surprise when a sequel was reported last year. And with all the financial success from last time, this continuation has more resources at its disposal. That increased budget is evident on screen and partly why Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey II surpasses the original.
Returning director Rhys Frake-Waterfield is joined by Summer of ‘84 writer Matt Leslie, and their collaboration is a quasi-reset of the first Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey. The prior film is now treated as an in-universe adaptation of Christopher Robin’s horrific ordeal.

Made on a budget of less than $100,000, director Rhys Frake-Waterfield’s movie Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (watch it Here) earned more than $6 million during its global release earlier this year – which means the sequel, which is going by the title Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2, has a larger budget. In fact, it’s estimated to be around ten times the budget of the first movie. The filmmakers are using some of that extra money to give the creature effects an upgrade, as you can see by the look of Pooh in a recently unveiled image from the film. That image can be found at the bottom of this article.

Winnie the Pooh will be sporting a brand new look in the upcoming slasher sequel Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2, which promises to be bigger and bloodier.
The Hollywood Reporter shares the latest sneak peek at Blood and Honey 2 this morning, giving us our first look at the brand new Winnie the Pooh character design.
Returning director Rhys Frake-Waterfield tells the outlet, “This time we have people doing the prosthetics — it’s a company that has worked on Harry Potter’s Voldemort and Star Wars. And they’ve been in charge of the redesigns of the creature. And that’s why Pooh looks a bit more scary. There’s an extra level of detail there.”
He notes that the cost of bringing Pooh to life for the first Blood and Honey was a mere $770, while the sequel’s bigger budget allowed for a $20,000 spend on the character design.

Made on a budget of less than $100,000, director Rhys Frake-Waterfield’s movie Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (watch it Here) earned more than $6 million during its global release earlier this year. Frake-Waterfield is now in the midst of working on a sequel that has a substantially larger budget – and during a conversation with Variety, the filmmaker revealed that the larger budget has enabled him to pack more than thirty kills into this follow-up!
A.A. A sequel to this year’s Winnie the Pooh slasher movie, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 is on the way soon, and it promises to be bigger, bloodier, and (hopefully) better.
Speaking with Variety this week, returning writer/director Rhys Frake-Waterfield talks about the increase in budget for the sequel, and how it will allow for more carnage.
“In comparison to the first film everything’s stepped up massively. It’s a horror film. A lot of the times people are going there for the death scenes and for those elements and we’ve really upped the ante,” Frake-Waterfield explains. “I think the last time I did a count there was over 30 deaths in the movie, which is quite substantial compared to most movies. I think that’s at least over three times what the first film had and there’s various massacres and stuff. So there’s...

A sequel to this year’s Winnie the Pooh slasher movie, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 is on the way and in production now, and IGN shares new imagery today.
The sequel will feature Winnie the Pooh, Christopher Robin, Piglet, and Owl, we recently learned, and IGN confirms this week that Tigger will also be brought into the mix.
“Tigger is incredibly violent. He loves to torture his victims before killing them,” producer Scott Jeffrey tells IGN, teasing the twisted version of Tigger we’ll meet next year.
IGN also reveals that the reason Tigger wasn’t used in the first movie is because the character wasn’t in the public domain at the time. In 2024, however, he will be.

Pooh Bear is back, but not the cutesy, softly-spoken and honey-guzzling children’s variety. This one comes with sledgehammer and a penchant for bloody murder.
The Hollywood Reporter can exclusively reveal the first stills from Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2, the follow-up to the micro-budget British slasher that went viral last year for its childhood-bludgeoning premise, became one of the most talked about films of 2023 and would earn $5.2 million in the global box office after costing under $100,000 to make.

“Shakespeare in Love” actor Simon Callow has been cast in the sequel to micro-budget slasher hit “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey.”
Stage and screen star Callow, who has also appeared in “Four Weddings and a Funeral” and “The Witcher” among other fare, is set to play a character called Cavendish, who is described by the filmmakers as “a pivotal character with a dark past somehow tied to Christopher Robin.”
“Cavendish’s tragic life, marked with alcoholism, violence and regret, not only brings significant depth to the story, but revelation as well,” the producers tell Variety.
Variety understands Callow was approached via his agents and, liking the character, agreed to sign on for the role.
“Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey” debuted earlier this year and quickly became a smash hit, grossing almost $5 million of a budget of less than $100,000.

The tragedy cast a very long shadow. Up on Droop Mountain, a college student discovered the bodies of hitchhikers Vicki Durian and Nancy Santomero. They’d both suffered close-range gunshot wounds and were left for dead. The year was 1980, and the summer had barely ripened. The entire region, down to my hometown 20 minutes away, heard about what happened. I grew up in the ‘90s in a town called Renick, and that story clung to our valley like a dark, sticky spider web. I first recall hearing the story from my best friend Sam when I was in elementary school. A good 15 years had passed and the Rainbow Murders, as they were called, still erupted in hushed whispers and gossip. No one was bound to ever forget it.

The rise of new coronavirus cases has led to more than just the tumbling Dow. Three major film and TV productions have paused shoots in the last week, while many live in-person events have been postponed or canceled — renewing worries in Hollywood that the industry’s recent progress may face new setbacks. Certainly it means that safety protocols will not be diminished anytime soon, producers and other industry insiders told TheWrap. “With Covid rates increasing again and a growing number of vaccinated people experiencing breakthrough cases, and even hospitalizations, I think vigilance will increase and folks will clamp down once again to ensure a safe set,” director-producer Matt Leslie told TheWrap. “Producers are not taking this lightly.” The spike in Covid cases and hospitalizations may well have been a factor in an agreement on Monday night to extend existing safety protocols and allow producers to require vaccinations on film and TV sets.

As film and television productions labor to get off the ground following months of coronavirus shutdowns, one horror indie has quietly wrapped a nearly four-week shoot in Los Angeles.
Co-writers and directors Matt Leslie and Stephen Smith have completed “The Knocking,” a bloody tale of a serial monogamist that shot for 19 days amid intense coronavirus safety protocols.
Shiloh Fernandez (“Burn”), Doug Jones (“The Shape of Water”), Alexis Knapp (“Pitch Perfect” series) and Ser’Darius Blain (“Jumanji”) lead the cast. Leslie and Smith previously collaborated as writers on the gritty thriller “Summer of ’84,” which played in the Sundance Film Festival’s Midnight section. This is their first feature as co-directors.
“The Knocking” follows a young man who tells his new girlfriend that he loves her for the first time — then finds himself next in line for a nightmarish curse that’s claimed all those boyfriends who have come before him.

As Hollywood crawls toward some version of normalcy amid the coronavirus pandemic, we at Variety have been curious about how the day-to-day work of film and television production would resume. After an invitation from two indie film producers — Maurice Fadida and Eric B. Fleischman — to visit the set of “The Knocking,” I was able to observe the meticulous new protocols in action.

The coronavirus has shut down film and TV production, so horror filmmakers Matt Leslie (“Summer of ’84”) and Dylan Mulick (“Nvrlnd”) decided to take matters into their own hands and film a horror short, titled “Zoom Cloud Hack – #91784 – The Tribe Murders,” in the confines of their own home.
“We got together for coffee one day, socially distanced of course, and Dylan said, ‘dude I’m climbing walls, I need to do something,’ and I said, ‘well what we can do?'” Leslie told TheWrap. “We started talking about making a horror short and Dylan came up with the Zoom idea and then we started riffing.”
A day later, the duo had a script, Mulick said. And a day and a half after that, they were fully cast with actors they felt confident in to pull together a film that wasn’t going to be pieced together on a set.

A serial killer is on the loose in this new trailer for Summer of '84, and a group of teens in the 80s take it upon themselves to catch the killer, who they believe is their next door neighbor. Here's the full synopsis:
Every serial killer is somebody’s neighbor. For 15-year-old Davey, the thought of having a serial killer in his suburban town is a scary yet exciting prospect at the start of a lazy summer. In hormonal overdrive, Davey and his friends dream of sexual conquests until the news reports of the Cape May killer. Davey convinces his friends that they must investigate, and they uncover that his next-door neighbor, an unassuming, single police officer, could be the prime suspect. Could Davey possibly be right, or is it his overactive imagination?
This seems like it has all the right ingredients for a film that a lot of geeks...

Like most genre fans, I fell head over heels for Turbo Kid, the first feature from the filmmaking trio Rkss (François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell) that transported viewers to a post-apocalyptic future where BMX bikes and friendship rule over the savageness of the brand new world. For their follow-up feature, Rkss heads back to the Reagan Era for their genre-defying Summer of ’84, a murder mystery/slasher/coming-of-age comedy hybrid that confidently explores the triumphs and tribulations of being a teenager, all while delivering a horrifying tale that conjures up some really fun scares along the way.
In the Summer of ’84, we meet 15-year-old Davey (Graham Verchere), who’s obsessed with mysteries and conspiracy theories. He begins to suspect that his neighbor, Officer Mackey (Rich Sommer), might actually be the Cape May Killer, a kidnapper and murderer targeting teenaged boys who live in the idyllic suburban neighborhoods of the area.

Filmmaking collective, Rkss, creator of 2015's Canadian cult hit Turbo Kid, are taking us back to the Summer of '84 in their next retro-fueled film. While it's impossible not to compare the film to recent nostalgia hits like Stranger Things and It, Summer of '84 looks to have it's own identity and is at least about something very different than the supernatural - a serial killer. In the film, a group of Goonies, er, kids, go on a mission to track down the "Cape May Killer" terrorizing their town. Clues lead them to thinking it could be their new next door neighbour (Fright Night, anyone?).
